Released over 30 years ago, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remains a beloved thriller. The story of a nanny seeking revenge on a family she blames for ruining her life has gained a dedicated fanbase over the years.
The classic thriller, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, has been remade and is now streaming on Disney+ in the UK. This new version stars Maika Monroe, known for her roles in It Follows and Longlegs, taking over the iconic part originally played by Rebecca De Mornay.
I’m really intrigued by this remake! It sounds like they’re going for a much darker, more intense vibe than the original – they’re calling it a horror-thriller, which makes sense considering Marilyn Monroe is the main star. It definitely seems like they’re leaning into a more suspenseful and scary direction.

“The film we created is entirely original,” Monroe clarified. “Although it’s labeled a remake, we weren’t actually recreating an existing movie.”
The only thing these stories have in common is a nanny who causes trouble for a family. Otherwise, the characters and everything else are totally different.
“So that felt nice that we weren’t trying to copy. It felt very fresh and current.”
Even though this version of the story gives the mysterious nanny a different name – Polly instead of Peyton – the role is strongly linked to De Mornay’s famous portrayal. So, how did Monroe avoid simply copying that performance?

I loved the original performance – Rebecca was incredible. So, when I took on the role, it was important to pay tribute to that while also making it my own.
The movie features Monroe alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays Caitlyn Morales, Raúl Castillo as her husband Miguel, and Mileiah Vega as their daughter, Emma. Martin Starr, Riki Lindhome, and Shannon Cochran also appear in the film.
Now that the movie is streaming, it’s a great choice for a slightly spooky Halloween watch, even if you didn’t love the first one.
You can now watch “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” on Disney+, with subscriptions starting at just £5.99 per month.
