Forty years after the original “Back to the Future” movie hit theaters, its star, Michael J. Fox, has shared why he believes the films still resonate with audiences: the issue of bullying, which feels particularly relevant today.
He recently told Empire magazine that we’re currently living in a society where bullying is common. He noted that bullies are all around us, and it’s obvious who they are.
He continued: “In this movie, Biff’s a bully. Time’s a bully.”
Biff, famously played by Thomas F. Wilson, was the main villain throughout all three Back to the Future films. He was first presented as the classic American high school bully, known for his put-downs and tendency to make fun of others – often with his signature line, “Hello? Anybody home?”
In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, Michael J. Fox drew a parallel between Donald Trump and the character Biff Tannen, famously stating, “Biff is president!” This comparison wasn’t surprising, as Bob Gale, a co-writer of the Back to the Future films, had already revealed that Biff’s casino empire in Part II was based on Trump, making it clear who Fox was referencing with his recent comments.
In a recent interview, Michael J. Fox described Parkinson’s disease as a tormentor, reflecting on his decades-long struggle with the condition, which he first received a diagnosis for in the 1990s.
He explained the film’s lasting appeal comes down to its message about facing adversity. It’s about finding the strength to confront bullies, showing courage, and persevering through challenges.
There’s definitely something resonating with audiences right now. Many people are connecting with the movie because it touches on feelings and experiences they didn’t even realize they had.
When Back to the Future came out, it quickly became a classic. It was followed by two sequels, Back to the Future Part II in 1989 and Back to the Future Part III in 1990, and all three movies were directed by Robert Zemeckis.
The original movie has remained a favorite from the 1980s and was even turned into a stage musical that premiered in 2020.
