All Creatures Great and Small’s Anna Madeley on Mrs Hall’s secret talent – and *that* Siegfried speculation

Anna Madeley clearly disagreed when I hinted that her character, Mrs. Hall from All Creatures Great and Small, might be holding back her feelings.

She started by saying, with no hint of humor, that it’s ironic to categorize characters when the show’s goal from the beginning has been to avoid predictable stereotypes and clichés.

Mrs Hall, Madeley is adamant, is not your typical busybody, buttoned-up housekeeper.

As a movie fan, I always get a little tired of the predictable ‘bossy woman’ character – you know, the one who just barks orders. What I really loved about this character, though, is that they went deeper. She wasn’t just acting that way; there was a real history and backstory that explained why she was the way she was. It felt so much more refreshing and genuine than falling into that old trope.

And who is she?

She’s a product of her background and holds typical expectations for someone from her community. She’s overcome challenges in both her marriage and with her son, and overall, she’s led a difficult life.

Madeley is right to point out that my description of her character wasn’t quite accurate. Her Mrs. Hall is younger and more approachable than the character in the novels, with a rich inner life and surprising skills – we just learned she’s a talented darts player!

Madeley beautifully portrays Mrs. Hall as more than just the steady, reliable presence at Skeldale House. She’s not only essential to keeping things running smoothly, but also the heart and moral compass of the home. While she embodies the strength expected of her time and social standing, Madeley also reveals a surprising gentleness. Just as the vets care for injured animals, Mrs. Hall subtly mends emotional wounds – including her own.

I really admire her because she’s not afraid to say what she thinks, but she always does it with kindness. She’s the one who’ll bring up difficult topics that everyone else is avoiding, and she’s right – we need to talk about those things!

Mrs. Hall has only faced figurative problems so far, but with the unpredictable Siegfried around, anything could happen. Could a romantic connection develop between the grumpy, unusual vet – portrayed by Samuel West – and Mrs. Hall?

Madeley was clearly surprised, reacting with a mix of laughter and shock. She explained that a genuine friendship had developed between the two individuals, and because they’re from the same generation, they easily connect and relate to each other’s life experiences. She also added that it’s simply enjoyable to watch their playfully argumentative dynamic.

Putting an end to speculation about a romantic connection, Madeley admits that the two individuals “get along well and clearly care for each other,” but playfully suggests that the future of their relationship remains uncertain.

All Creatures Great and Small continues on Thursday at 9pm on 5.
