At one beauty pageant, things took a turn for the awkward.
At the Miss Grand International pageant in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 18th, a mix-up occurred where Miss Panama, Isamar Herrera, thought she had made the Top 20. It turned out the announcer had actually called Miss Paraguay, Cecilia Romero’s, name.
When Miss Panama walked onto the stage, the host, Matthew Deane, hesitated for a moment before addressing the problem.
“I beg your pardon,” he could be heard saying over the mic. “I announced Miss Grand Paraguay.”
Miss Panama swiftly moved to the back of the stage group, walking past Miss Paraguay who was heading towards the front.
“It’s really loud in here,” Deane said, noting the hall was full of fans who had traveled from around the globe.”
Emma Tiglao of the Philippines won the crown, receiving it from last year’s winner, Christine Opiaza, who was also from the Philippines. This was the first time in Miss Grand International history that the same country had won the title two years in a row.
As for Miss Panama, she appeared to take the blunder in stride.
She acknowledged the incident immediately, telling the Daily Mail it was simply a mistake that occurred during the competition.
The 31-year-old added, “You have to know how to lose and recognize the triumph of others.”
Although she appeared to accept that errors can occur, the situation reminded many of the 2015 Miss Universe competition. Host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez, as the winner, when the actual winner was Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, who was the first runner-up.
Even though Harvey wasn’t to blame – he received an incorrect card – the incident has remained memorable for him over the years.
