Doctor Strange has had many adventures, but his next one, starting December 3rd in Doctor Strange #1, could be his most challenging yet. He’s no longer Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme; instead, he now protects Asgard. With Asgard cut off from Earth, Strange is stranded and must travel through all nine realms to uncover a growing threat. He won’t be alone, though – he’ll be joined by the powerful Angela.
The new Doctor Strange comic series, created by writer Derek Landy and artist Ivan Fiorelli, will explore major challenges for the character as he adjusts to a new life, separated from everything he once knew. In an interview with ComicBook, Landy hinted at surprises and excitement for fans. You can get a sneak peek at Doctor Strange #1, plus see the covers for issues #2 and #3.
Doctor Strange Has a Difficult (and Exciting) Journey Ahead

Doctor Strange is venturing into completely new areas in his next story. What part of this new adventure has been the most exciting for you?
As a longtime fan, what’s really grabbed me about the recent stories is seeing how Strange copes with losing the things he always relied on. He can’t just use the same magic, his Cloak is gone, and he doesn’t have the Eye anymore. It makes you wonder what he had to give up to find new ways to be powerful. He’s still the Sorcerer Supreme, so he’s still incredibly strong, but it’s fascinating to see what that strength even means when he’s traveling through all the Nine Realms now.
Putting a character in an unfamiliar situation is a great way to understand who they really are. When you strip away everything they rely on – their home, family, and friends – how do they react? How far will they go, and what will they sacrifice, to help strangers? These questions drive the story.
You know, as a big Doctor Strange fan, I’ve been thinking about how this latest story feels both new and…well, a little bit like things we’ve seen before. It’s interesting how the filmmakers are building on what they established with him previously, but also trying to take things in a different direction. I’m curious about how this one compares to the earlier movies and comics – what feels fresh, and what echoes familiar themes?
The Stephen Strange featured in Doctor Strange of Asgard was still upset about losing his position as Sorcerer Supreme. He was determined to become powerful enough to return to Earth, confront Doctor Doom, and regain his title. However, before he could achieve this, the path back home was blocked, preventing his return.
It’s tough watching him right now. He’s still clearly haunted by everything happening back on Earth, especially his need to get back to Clea and handle things there. But on top of that, he’s now stuck with all the duties that come with being the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard! It’s interesting because he initially wanted that power for his own reasons, and now he’s really facing the consequences of that decision. It’s a really complex situation for him.
Angela Is a Perfect Fit for Strange’s Dilemma

I’m really happy and a bit surprised to see Angela involved – it adds a great element to the story! I’m curious, what part of this story do you think fans will find most unexpected?
This story throws a character into a completely unfamiliar world, so we decided Doctor Strange needed a guide to help him navigate the Nine Realms. As soon as Angela was suggested, she felt like the perfect fit. She’s a complex and fascinating addition to the Marvel Universe, developed by several writers – including Brian Bendis, Kieron Gillen, and others – and her straightforward nature provides a great contrast to Strange’s own struggles. She’s also a character who’s still growing and changing, which makes her particularly compelling.
What’s one thing you think Doctor Strange fans need to know about this new series?
The new series is visually stunning, thanks to the incredible artwork of Ivan Fiorelli – his expressive and dynamic style truly brings the Nine Realms to life. The story quickly moves beyond Asgard, throwing Strange and Angela into a fast-paced adventure with Angels and Dark Elves. There’s so much happening, and the threats are so huge – affecting every realm in the universe – that it’s hard to pick just one highlight. You’ll simply have to experience it for yourself!
