Zack Snyder recently released a new photo of Ben Affleck as Batman from the DC Extended Universe, and it’s a reminder of how disappointing it is that Affleck never got his own Batman movie before the franchise was restarted. Ben Affleck first appeared as Bruce Wayne/Batman in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a sequel directed by Snyder that featured a battle between Batman and Superman. He went on to play the role in Suicide Squad, Justice League, and The Flash, but a standalone Batman film starring Affleck never materialized.
James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios, haven’t announced who will play the new Batman in the DC Universe, although the character briefly appeared in the animated series Creature Commandos. Recently, director Zack Snyder shared a photo of Ben Affleck in his Batman costume, including the brown trench coat from the “Knightmare” sequence in his director’s cut of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Seeing the photo makes me wish Affleck had gotten the chance to star in his own Batman movie, which was originally planned but never made.
Why Ben Affleck’s Batman Movie Never Came to Fruition in the DCEU
Ben Affleck became Batman in 2013 and quickly began working on a solo Batman movie he would direct and co-write with Geoff Johns. Originally titled The Batman, it was planned for release after Justice League in 2017. However, after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received mixed reviews and the DC Extended Universe changed direction, the project was put on hold and Affleck decided to step down as director. This opened the door for Matt Reeves to take over the directing role.
As a huge Batman fan, I was fascinated to learn how different Matt Reeves’ vision for the character was. He really wanted to explore a younger, earlier version of Bruce Wayne – the one Robert Pattinson played in The Batman. Apparently, the original ending of Justice League had Lex Luthor sending Deathstroke after Batman, which was meant to kick off Ben Affleck’s planned solo film. Sadly, Warner Bros. scrapped those plans. From what I understand, Affleck’s movie would have shown Deathstroke systematically ruining Batman’s life, leading to a massive confrontation. It’s a shame we never got to see that story unfold, but it’s cool to know what could have been.
Problems with Warner Bros. and DC Films, along with some questionable decisions, led Ben Affleck to step away from playing Batman after his own standalone movie plans fell through. While he had a short appearance in The Flash (2023), a potential cameo in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom didn’t make the final cut. Many fans hoped to see more of Affleck’s Batman, particularly focusing on his skills as a detective and his backstory. However, excitement is now building for the official introduction of Batman in the new DC Universe.
