Power Is An Underrated Masterpiece That Evolved Modern Crime Dramas

The 2010s offered many excellent crime dramas, but Power on Starz stood out and still doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, even years after it ended. While shows like Fargo and Narcos were popular and praised during that decade, Power, which premiered in 2014, was often overlooked.

The series Power takes place in New York City and centers on James St. Patrick, known as Ghost (played by Omari Hardwick), and his struggle to juggle a criminal drug business with his desire for a normal, lawful life. With compelling characters, dramatic storylines, and constant surprises, Power quickly became one of television’s most popular shows, captivating audiences for all six seasons.

Look, Power wasn’t perfect – there were definitely times when storylines felt a little recycled, and that finale? Whew, people had opinions! But honestly, the show was just so gripping, full of moments that really stuck with me. It’s amazing to me that it kept going with all those spin-offs in the 2020s, and while some people love them and some don’t, nothing really compares to the original series, in my opinion.

Power Is Still One Of The Best Crime Dramas From The 2010s

Though it was popular during the 2010s, the show Power doesn’t get nearly enough credit for how good it was. It really stood out because it wasn’t afraid to take big chances, making it one of the best shows of the last decade. The main character, Ghost, was particularly complex – sometimes you loved him, and sometimes his ruthless behavior was hard to excuse, but he always kept you hooked.

It was fun watching him trick and defeat the villains, but his treatment of loved ones could be upsetting. Other popular characters, like Tommy and Kanan, also had serious flaws, and even generally good characters like Joe Proctor started to become corrupt.

As a critic, I have to say Power really knew how to keep you on the edge of your seat – the drama was relentless. And 50 Cent’s music? It was a perfect match for the show’s energy and look. What really set Power apart, though, was its willingness to take risks. The deaths of Holly and Raina were genuinely shocking, and they made it clear that this show wasn’t afraid to kill off major characters. That constant threat of violence and betrayal became a defining characteristic, and in my opinion, it’s what ultimately cemented Power‘s place as one of the greatest shows ever made.

Despite Its Popularity, Power Doesn’t Get As Much Love As Its Competition

As a huge fan of crime dramas, I always felt Power was a bit underrated. It got great reviews, the acting was phenomenal, and it just had this magnetic pull, but it didn’t seem to get the same attention as shows like Breaking Bad or Sons of Anarchy. Considering Breaking Bad had just finished its run and Sons of Anarchy was wrapping up right as Power started, I really thought it was poised to be a massive hit – and honestly, I think it was just as good, if not better, than those other shows.

Even though many other strong contenders existed back then, Power seemed poised to become incredibly popular. While it developed a dedicated fanbase and remains a large fictional world, it doesn’t receive the attention it deserves.

While some Power fans were disappointed by Ghost’s death, those surprising choices are a big reason why the show remained so consistently excellent throughout its six seasons. It’s a shame the show wasn’t on a major network or didn’t feature huge stars, which likely limited how many people saw it. But if you haven’t watched Power yet, it’s absolutely worth your time.
