A recent report brings some sobering news for fans of the Nintendo GameCube. It’s been 24 years since Nintendo launched the console, and it wasn’t a commercial success. The GameCube sold around 21 million units and was relatively short-lived, quickly replaced by the Wii just five years after its 2001 release. Nintendo discontinued it in 2007. While a commercial failure for the company, the GameCube remains beloved by many dedicated Nintendo fans. Despite its brief time on the market, it hosted some truly excellent and exclusive games between 2001 and 2007.
In 2004, Retro Studios and Nintendo released Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, a highly acclaimed sequel to the all-time classic Metroid Prime, which originally came out in 2002. Nintendo recently remastered the original Metroid Prime in 2023, leading many to expect remasters of the other games in the series before the release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond later this year. However, a new report indicates that won’t happen – at least not before Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is released.
New Report
A recent report from YouTuber Kiwi Talkz, who often shares Nintendo news, claims that a remastered version of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is not in development.
According to a source familiar with game development, a remastered version of Metroid Prime 2 is unlikely to exist. They state that no developers they’ve spoken with have confirmed it, and information about the project has been impossible to find, even rumors of HD ports seem unreliable.
Kiwi Talkz believes Retro Studios likely prefers to handle any potential remaster of the game themselves, but they’ve been focused on Metroid Prime 4. This suggests a remaster might not come out until after Metroid Prime 4 is released. However, Nintendo will probably want to see how well Metroid Prime 4 sells before investing further in the series.
Although one GameCube game isn’t coming back anytime soon, another classic from the system was released this week – but you’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play it.
Just keep in mind that this isn’t official information, so don’t take it as fact. We’d love to hear your thoughts, though! Feel free to leave a comment or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum.
