A beloved video game series, originally popular on the PlayStation 2, is back with a brand new game after nearly 15 years. The PS2 was home to many iconic franchises – including God of War, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, Guitar Hero, Yakuza, and Devil May Cry – that are still going strong today. Now, fans are excited to see a series that hasn’t had a new release since 2011 make its triumphant return.
This week, Bandai Namco Entertainment launched Once Upon a Katamari on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. For those new to the series, Katamari began in 2004 with the popular Katamari Damacy, which was originally available only on PlayStation 2. The unique gameplay—rolling objects into increasingly large balls—became a hit, leading to several sequels over the next ten years, including We Love Katamari and Katamari Forever.
While remastered versions of the classic Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari have been released recently, the last brand-new Katamari game, Touch My Katamari, came out in 2011 for the PlayStation Vita. Now, Once Upon a Katamari offers a fresh experience for players, staying true to the original spirit of the series that started on the PlayStation 2.
Early reviews for Once Upon a Katamari are mostly good. It currently has a score of 78 out of 100 on Metacritic and a “Very Positive” rating from players on Steam. While it’s unlikely to win Game of the Year, Once Upon a Katamari seems to be satisfying fans, and that’s a great sign.
It’s really exciting to see games that first appeared on the PS2 still being enjoyed in 2025. While many PS2-era games have disappeared or changed a lot over time, Once Upon a Katamari shows there’s still a demand for those simpler, classic titles. Hopefully, this will lead to more games from that era making a comeback soon.
