The Superman comic has quickly become a standout title, delivering the large-scale superhero action fans expect while also developing the characters around Superman. It’s become a key part of DC’s ongoing storylines, playing a role in the setup for DC K.O. Issue #31 of Superman directly ties into the events of DC K.O. #1, featuring Superman and other heroes battling Darkseid. While Earth’s population is being evacuated, Lois Lane unexpectedly visits the Fortress of Solitude and discovers a surprising new side to her husband’s life.
The Fortress of Solitude is incredibly important to Superman. It’s the last remaining piece of his home planet, Krypton, created by his parents to help him adjust to life on Earth. Inside, it holds not only robotic helpers, but also a computer system containing the preserved memories and personalities of his parents, Jor-El and Lara. These AI programs have interacted with Superman and his allies for years, and while they aren’t truly alive, they function as closely to sentience as possible. Lois Lane discovers something remarkable about them that will completely change how you view the Fortress.
Lois Lane Gives Superman a Reason to Be Better

Lois Lane has really come into her own lately, becoming a true partner to Superman in their efforts to protect the world. In Superman #31, she visits the Fortress of Solitude hoping to find information in its records that could help Superman and other heroes. She initially speaks with a hologram of Jor-El, but he doesn’t have any new insights and starts to malfunction. Concerned she’s damaged the Fortress, Lois is relieved when a hologram of Lara appears.
The holographic figure starts by stating, “You love my son.” Then, surprisingly for a Superman story, she tells Lois that she’d wished Superman would find her. I don’t believe this means the AI could predict the future, but rather that Lara hoped her son would find true love. The Fortress of Solitude has observed Lois Lane for years, and her connection with Superman seems to have triggered something within it.
Jor-El and Lara designed the Fortress of Solitude, embedding their own memories and personalities into its system. Lara specifically programmed it to observe Superman and anyone he brought with him, hoping to identify someone who genuinely loved him. A dedicated part of the Fortress’s computer was built for this purpose, capable of sharing Lara’s memories with the person who proved their love. Essentially, the Fortress was intended to act as Superman’s parents, guiding and protecting him even after they were gone.
Lois discovers that even though the Kryptonians didn’t know Darkseid by name, they had legends about a powerful “final god” destined to destroy everything. Lara, while researching Kryptonian history, uncovered these stories – details readers saw in Justice League: The Omega Act. The Fortress of Solitude’s computer suggests a connection between Superman, Doomsday, and this ultimate threat, revealing Doomsday was created as a weapon to fight the final god. This ties directly into the events of the recent Superman storyline and highlights the significant role Doomsday plays in Superman’s life.
Superman and Lois Lane’s Relationship May Have Just Saved the World

The thought of Lara Lor-Van programming the Fortress of Solitude’s computer to gauge someone’s love for her son is both fitting and unexpected. It seems like exactly the kind of thing Jor-El and Lara would do, yet it’s surprisingly unusual. Even more significantly, the information Lara shared with Lois about Doomsday – that he was engineered to defeat a supreme being – could be the most vital knowledge the Fortress has ever revealed, and it was given solely out of love.
As a huge comic book fan, I truly believe Superman and Lois Lane have the best superhero romance ever written. They just click – two people from totally different worlds who somehow make it work. Their relationship has really enriched the DC Universe over the years, and the recent Superman #31 issue really hammers home how deeply they care for each other, even a computer program could recognize their powerful connection!
Superman #31 is on sale now.
