Zack Snyder is known for directing big franchises like the DC Extended Universe and Rebel Moon. However, one of his films stands out as a single, self-contained story with the potential for more. That movie is becoming available to stream on HBO Max at the end of October, as the service prepares to add new content next month.
Zack Snyder’s 2011 film, Sucker Punch, wasn’t a hit with critics or audiences, but it’s gained a following since then. It’s coming to HBO Max on November 1st, giving fans a chance to watch it again. Before directing bigger movies like Man of Steel, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, Snyder created this epic action fantasy starring Emily Browning as Babydoll. The story follows a teenager stuck in a 1950s asylum who escapes into a vivid fantasy world as she plots her freedom, making it hard to tell what’s real and what’s not.
Sucker Punch Should Have Started a Franchise
Despite having the potential for a franchise, Sucker Punch wasn’t successful with either critics or audiences, and it didn’t make much money in theaters. The film only earned $89 million worldwide, despite costing $75 to $82 million to make, and received poor reviews – a 22% rating from critics and a 47% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The unique structure of Sucker Punch, blending different genres, created a strong foundation for a franchise. Sequels could have built on the film’s imaginative world and introduced new virtual realities and characters. The complex storyline also allowed the movie to tackle powerful themes like overcoming trauma, the desire to escape, finding strength, and challenging controlling forces – ideas that could have been developed further. However, what truly stood out was Zack Snyder’s striking visual style, which even critics admired, and a franchise could have really showcased even more of his talent for visual storytelling.
Other Movies Coming to HBO Max
On November 1st, several movies will become available on HBO Max, including Sucker Punch, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Dangerous Liaisons, House of 1000 Corpses, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. More titles will be added throughout the month, with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes arriving on November 2nd, The LEGO Ninjago Movie on November 5th, and A Man Called Otto on November 6th.
