Leaving Ben Solo Dead Means Star Wars Will Never Redeem 1 Major Villain

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always loved how the films explore characters turning away from the dark side. Darth Vader is the classic example, of course – seeing him save Luke and defeat the Emperor in Return of the Jedi was incredibly powerful. But I think Kylo Ren’s journey in the sequel trilogy is just as compelling. He starts out determined to destroy everything the Jedi stood for and crush the Resistance, and for a while, he almost succeeds! Thankfully, he eventually has a change of heart and ultimately helps save the galaxy. It’s amazing to see these characters find their way back to the light, even after doing terrible things.

The tragic part of Ben’s transformation is that it costs him his life. He sacrifices himself to give Rey, the true hero, the power she needs to continue the Jedi Order. While Disney could have explored other options to keep Ben involved in the story, they chose a different path. This means his character arc is complete, and a potentially redeemable villain is ultimately left without hope.

Disney Decided Not to Bring Ben Solo Back to Life

Since the release of The Rise of Skywalker, Disney is exploring the Star Wars universe extensively. The Disney+ streaming service features numerous shows set in that galaxy, including series like Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and Star Wars: The Acolyte that aren’t directly tied to the Skywalker family story. However, beloved characters from the films aren’t being forgotten. A new movie focusing on Rey is in the works, continuing her story from the end of The Rise of Skywalker and showing her as she trains a new generation of Jedi. There’s also been discussion of a potential Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) movie, with a pitch developed by Steven Soderbergh and Adam Driver.

Adam Driver hasn’t shared how his character, Kylo Ren, could have returned from death, but there were many possibilities, given the power of the dark side. Ultimately, Disney decided against bringing the character back, feeling it wouldn’t fit the story. It’s disappointing for fans and for Driver, who excelled in the role despite the inconsistent direction given to his character in the sequels. Even more frustrating is that this decision also means a significant villain connected to Kylo Ren won’t be appearing in future installments.

Snoke Will Go Down as Star Wars’ Most Confusing Villain

One of the best things about Star Wars is its ability to develop characters over time. Ahsoka Tano, when she first appeared in The Clone Wars, came across as a typical, frustrating young character. But she quickly evolved into a wise teacher and a powerful fighter. Sometimes, sticking with a character pays off in Star Wars. Supreme Leader Snoke seemed to believe this after his unexpected death in The Last Jedi. It seemed logical his story wasn’t over, as he was set up to be the main villain of the trilogy. However, The Rise of Skywalker diminished his importance, revealing he was simply a tool used by Palpatine.

If Ben Solo had come back, the Star Wars story could have explained away its earlier changes by telling a new version of events. While the comics delve into Ben and Snoke’s history, a live-action movie would have had a much bigger impact. It could have given us a better understanding of Snoke’s power and the harm he caused to the New Republic. Perhaps Ben could have spent his time fixing those problems, or dealing with Snoke’s followers who still held secrets. Ultimately, a film exploring the darker side of the sequel trilogy could have helped redeem Snoke and improve the films he was in.
