Sony has confirmed it won’t be bidding to buy Warner Bros., which its parent company has recently made available for sale.
Warner Bros. announced last week that it’s exploring options to increase value for its investors, following speculation about potential buyouts. If Sony were to acquire Warner Bros., it would gain control of popular video game series like Mortal Kombat, Batman: Arkham, and Hogwarts Legacy, among others.
Despite recent speculation, Sony has no plans to acquire another company. According to CEO Hiroki Totoki in an interview with Nikkei, the company is focused on strengthening its position in anime and gaming rather than pursuing a large-scale Hollywood acquisition.
Totoki is thinking about opportunities in animation and television as he evaluates a potential purchase of Warner Bros. He explains that Sony is prioritizing growth potential over immediate profits, noting the anime market is just beginning to expand globally and is expected to grow rapidly for years to come.
Aniplex, which is owned by Sony, is behind many popular anime shows and movies today, including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle. As Aniplex expands in the anime industry, Sony has also invested in companies like Kadokawa and Bandai Namco. Earlier this year, there was speculation that Sony was trying to buy gaming properties from Warner Bros., but that doesn’t seem to be happening.
