The 1970s were a fantastic time for science fiction films. Movies like Alien, Soylent Green, and A Clockwork Orange are now considered classics, and their stories are still captivating. The decade also gave us the very first Star Wars and Star Trek movies, with Star Trek returning to TV screens nine years later.
There’s a lot of great classic science fiction available, full of interesting stories and memorable characters. However, when watching films from the 1970s today, the older technology and special effects can be quite noticeable and pull you out of the experience. Because of this, Hollywood might want to remake some of these beloved sci-fi movies to appeal to today’s viewers.
4) Logan’s Run

The 1976 film Logan’s Run depicts a future society where people live for pleasure until age 30, when they are killed – but told they will be reborn. The story follows the main character’s choice to join a group trying to break free from this system.
I’ve been really hoping they’d revisit Logan’s Run – it was announced a while back in 2017, but it hasn’t happened yet. I truly believe it’s a story worth telling now, though. The original’s premise – tracking people with computers – feels even more chilling today with how much we rely on technology like smartphones. Updating that aspect would be genuinely scary! Plus, imagine how much more impactful the story’s darker themes could be with modern special effects, and how amazing the action could look!
3) The Terminal Man

Similar to the film Logan’s Run, The Terminal Man features technology that has significantly advanced since the 1970s. Directed by the late Mike Hodges and based on the Michael Crichton novel of the same name, the movie tells the story of a man who receives an experimental brain implant designed to stop seizures that cause violent outbursts. Unfortunately, the surgery has the opposite effect, intensifying the seizures and turning him into a perpetually unconscious and dangerous killer.
The ideas in The Terminal Man – particularly the risks of new surgical procedures, the ethics of science, and the power of mind control – feel especially timely now. A remake could explore current technologies like microchips and electrodes that help people with paralysis regain movement. Plus, today’s visual effects could powerfully show the main character’s seizures, making the audience truly feel his loss of control.
2) Soylent Green

The film Soylent Green, set in 2022, feels particularly relevant today, as we’re now in 2025. Its themes of environmental destruction and the exploitation of the poor are more pressing than ever. However, because the movie is set in the past, it’s lost some of its impact as a futuristic warning – a remake could bring those themes powerfully into the present.
The biggest hurdle in remaking this movie would be finding an actor who can live up to Charlton Heston’s iconic performance. But it would definitely be worth the effort. Updating the setting to the 31st century would keep the futuristic feel fresh, and today’s special effects could make the film’s shocking murder and twist ending even more impactful.
1) Invasion of the Body Snatchers

The 1978 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers was actually a remake of a 1956 movie with the same plot. While widely considered a truly frightening science fiction classic, it could be even more impactful with today’s special effects and technology.
The movie centers around aliens that kidnap people and replace them with identical, but emotionless, copies. Back in 1978, strange happenings spread slowly, giving these ‘body snatchers’ time to operate secretly. But in the present day, with social media, it would be much harder for them to hide.
Including how people react, the spread of false information, and the government’s efforts to manage the news – especially with so many people reporting it themselves – would bring a really interesting, up-to-date feel to the story. Plus, today’s special effects could make the alien invasion even more frightening.
If you could remake any science fiction movie from the 1970s, which one would it be? Share your thoughts in the comments and discuss it with other fans in the ComicBook Forum!
