The BBC has announced that the new Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will premiere sooner than expected.
Okay, so I just heard about this new five-part series, and honestly, I’m already excited! It’s going to star Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, which is a fantastic pairing, and even better, a bunch of familiar faces from Doctor Who are popping up too. It was originally planned to come out in 2026, so hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long!
The BBC has announced that the spin-off series will be available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in 2024.
Disney won’t be involved in future seasons of the popular sci-fi show, but the BBC has confirmed it will continue making more episodes on its own.
Doctor Who will be back with a new Christmas special in 2026. Written by Russell T Davies, this will follow a 19-month break after Ncuti Gatwa’s last episode airs in May 2025.

The War Between the Land and the Sea, set in the Doctor Who universe, will center on the military group UNIT as they face a threat from the ancient Sea Devils.
Davies recently described the series as “absolutely brilliant”.
I’m incredibly proud of how it turned out. I genuinely think it’s fantastic – it feels like a really strong concept came together,” he shared on the Pilot TV podcast. He went on to say that often, after a show wraps up, people simply say, “We did a good job,” but this felt different.
He went on to explain that often, after filming is finished, everything is brought together in post-production. This involves working on things like visual effects, the soundtrack, and color correction.
This is truly amazing – even exceeding our expectations! I couldn’t be happier with the results.
I’m really excited to see Tovey and Mbatha-Raw working with some fantastic returning faces! Jemma Redgrave is back as Kate Stewart, which is amazing, and we’ll also be seeing Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim and Ruth Madeley as Shirley Bingham. It’s great to have those UNIT veterans joining the cast!
The War Between the Land and the Sea will air on BBC One on BBC iPlayer.
