Luca Guadagnino is a prolific director who has been consistently working on new films. Following the releases of Challengers and Queer last year, he’s already back with another film, After the Hunt, and has several other projects in the works. One of his most anticipated endeavors is a remake of American Psycho, the iconic 2000 horror film directed by Mary Harron. While Guadagnino signed on to direct American Psycho last year, news has been scarce. This has led to speculation, including rumors about the cast, one of which has now been proven false.
According to Deadline, director Luca Guadagnino’s remake of American Psycho will still feature a male Patrick Bateman, despite recent rumors. Speculation had been circulating that Margot Robbie might star in the lead role, but Deadline reports Guadagnino is actually looking for a male actor to play the part.
Should Patrick Bateman Be Gender-Swapped in Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho?

Recent reports have dismissed the idea of a female lead for the American Psycho remake, but it’s still worth thinking about whether that change could have been a good one. Christian Bale’s iconic performance as Patrick Bateman sets a very high bar, and the new actor will inevitably be compared to him. This comparison could negatively impact how the remake is received. Changing the character’s gender would allow the new film to feel fresh and explore the story in a new way, offering a different perspective. Margot Robbie is also a very talented actress who could undoubtedly handle the complexities of the role.
The idea of reimagining Patrick Bateman as a woman is interesting, but Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming American Psycho film has other ways to be unique. Mary Harron’s version took liberties with Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, and Guadagnino’s could be a more direct adaptation, much like Edgar Wright’s The Running Man which closely follows Stephen King’s original story. While the new film will likely share similarities with the first, embracing more of the book’s intense details could help it stand on its own and avoid simply being a copy.
Although Deadline has confirmed the new American Psycho film will star a male lead, they haven’t revealed who that actor will be. There were rumors that Austin Butler was considered, but Bret Easton Ellis, the author of the original novel, dismissed those reports as false. Patrick Schwarzenegger, known for his role in The White Lotus, has publicly expressed interest in playing Patrick Bateman. Currently, Deadline only reports that casting is still underway, and a decision hasn’t been made yet. Director Luca Guadagnino is presently filming Artificial, and likely won’t fully focus on American Psycho until that project is finished.
It’s going to be fascinating to see whether director Luca Guadagnino casts a famous actor or a fresh face as the new Patrick Bateman. Both options have their benefits. An unknown actor wouldn’t bring any pre-existing expectations to the role, allowing audiences to fully embrace the character and the story. However, unlike franchises like Marvel or DC, American Psycho doesn’t have a built-in audience, so a well-known actor could attract more viewers to the remake. Film fans would be excited to see what a star like Gerard Butler could bring to the role.
