A promising new manga series, Kaedegami by Jun Harukawa, has been cancelled in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. While it didn’t immediately reach the same popularity as titles like Kagurabachi and Ichi the Witch, Kaedegami started strong, earning praise for its unique idea and beautiful artwork. Unfortunately, reader interest faded quickly after its release, and the magazine decided to end the series before the first collected volume could even be published. Cancellations usually happen when manga sales aren’t profitable, but sometimes series are cut short even before that. The decision to end Kaedegami has disappointed many fans who were eager to see where the story would go.
Harukawa’s first serialized manga, Kaedegami, concluded after just 17 chapters. It will be collected in two volumes, with the first volume’s cover recently revealed. The first volume is scheduled for release in Japan on November 4, 2025. While Harukawa expressed interest in starting a new series with the magazine, there’s been no official confirmation. Currently, there are no plans for an English release, and it’s uncertain if the manga will be available outside of Japan given its early cancellation.
Kaedegami Had Potential in the Beginning, But It Didn’t Get a Chance

For centuries, people have been terrified of Shenguai – strange, monstrous creatures said to kidnap and devour humans, beings that seem impossible. The story centers around Kou, a young orphan left in the forest by his father, where he continues to live. He regularly visits town for supplies, and the villagers pity him, believing he’s completely alone. What they don’t know is that Kou has lived with Chiyou, a powerful Shenguai war god, since he was a child, after Chiyou mysteriously appeared before him years ago.
Both deeply lonely, Kou and Chiyou develop a strong connection over time, finding comfort in each other’s company, even though their relationship would be disastrous if discovered by others. Kou eventually learns that Chiyou lost her physical form long ago after a battle and has been suffering ever since. Initially, Chiyou planned to take over Kou’s body to survive, but she grew to care for him and decided to leave when her secret was revealed. However, after hearing about her tragic history, Kou is now determined to find a way to help her, no matter the cost.
The new manga got off to a fantastic start, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from readers. You can find Kaedegami on the official Manga Plus app. While the release date for Volume 2 is still unknown, it’s expected around three months after the first volume. Typically, series in Weekly Shonen Jump release new volumes every three months in Japan, and then those volumes become available internationally depending on how popular the series is and how much demand there is.
