Near the end of the first episode of Welcome to Derry, the new group of friends – Teddy, Phil, Lilly, Ronnie, and Phil’s sister Susie – go to a movie theater to watch The Music Man. They’re shocked when they see Matty appear in the film. He can hear them talking, but he’s trapped and unable to reach them through the screen.
The kids are trying to rescue Matty when they’re suddenly attacked by the troublesome demon baby. The creature quickly grows in size and brutally kills Teddy, Phil, and Susie. Lilly narrowly escapes and finds Ronnie, but is shocked to discover she’s still clutching Susie’s severed hand.
The show’s seemingly central characters – the kids who were set up to drive the main mystery – are almost all killed off by the end of the first episode. It was a shocking and terrifying way to conclude the premiere, but a brilliant strategic decision by the showrunners.
