Colin Farrell Offers an Update on His Other DC Movie, and Contradicts James Gunn

DC Studios is off to a promising beginning, with shows like Superman and Peacemaker proving popular. However, like any film studio, not all of their projects are progressing at the same speed – some movies and TV shows have been in development for quite a while. Colin Farrell knows this firsthand, as he’s returning as the Penguin in The Batman Part II. He was also considered for the lead role in Sgt. Rock, but the project stalled because of issues with the script. Farrell recently shared some news about its status.

In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Colin Farrell spoke about the Sgt. Rock script, calling it “fantastic” and hoping it will eventually be filmed. He mentioned he and director Luca Guadagnino had discussed the project a few times and had good conversations about it, but he doesn’t know what the current status is. Farrell believes the script is “really, really good” and deserves to be made.

Why DC’s Sgt. Rock Movie Isn’t Moving Forward Yet

It’s interesting to hear Colin Farrell talk about the Sgt. Rock script, because it seems to differ from what James Gunn has said. Over the summer, Gunn mentioned the movie was still being developed, which was great news! But he also admitted the script wasn’t quite hitting the mark creatively and needed work. Since becoming head of DC Studios, Gunn’s made it clear he won’t start filming anything until the script is exactly where he wants it. So, the fact that Sgt. Rock is on hold suggests he didn’t feel the same way about it as Farrell did. Maybe he liked certain ideas, but it sounds like the script still needs a bit of polishing before it’s ready to go.

Originally, it was thought that production on Sgt. Rock might start next summer, but that’s now unlikely. Since then, James Gunn announced that Luca Guadagnino is no longer directing, meaning DC Studios needs to find someone new to take on the project. There’s no word yet on when a new director will be chosen. Gunn is prioritizing a strong script, so he may wait to hire a director until it’s finished, ensuring they’re the right fit for the story. Additionally, Colin Farrell is no longer attached to star, meaning a new lead actor may also need to be cast.

James Gunn acknowledges the Sgt. Rock script still needs refinement, but even a basic understanding of the character reveals why John Farrell was so enthusiastic about it. Unlike most DC heroes, Sgt. Rock doesn’t have superpowers. He’s simply a WWII soldier, and his comics offered a unique and welcome change of pace. A Sgt. Rock movie would feel more like a traditional war film than a superhero adventure, which makes it a particularly interesting project for DC. If the script can be finalized, it would be a fantastic way to showcase Gunn’s vision for telling diverse stories and demonstrate the broad potential of comic book adaptations.

The release date for a potential Sgt. Rock movie is uncertain until a script is finalized. DC Studios is planning to release only one or two films in theaters each year, prioritizing quality over a large number of releases. With Man of Tomorrow and The Batman Part II already scheduled for 2027, 2028 seems to be the earliest possible release year for Sgt. Rock – and even that isn’t guaranteed. James Gunn recently suggested he’s hesitant to make movies about characters that aren’t widely known, and since Sgt. Rock isn’t a mainstream figure, DC Studios might focus on its biggest heroes – Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman – given current movie trends.
