There’s Only One Story We Need Marvel Zombies Season 2 to Tell (and It’s Obvious)

With Halloween 2025 approaching, Marvel Zombies has become a surprisingly popular hit. This is Marvel’s first animated series geared towards adult audiences, and it’s successfully transformed a previously underperforming area of Marvel Comics into a major event within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series benefited from the involvement of established Marvel Studios actors reprising their roles – and giving their characters a fresh take – alongside talented voice actors who filled out the cast.

The animated series Marvel Zombies took an interesting approach by showing the last stand of the heroes against the Zombie Queen, Scarlet Witch. Now that rumors are circulating about a second season at Marvel Studios, fans are starting to speculate about what’s next. While Marvel Zombies has been well-received, many viewers had mixed feelings about how the story ended. Warning: Spoilers ahead! The series focused on Kamala Khan as the last survivor, but she couldn’t prevent Wanda Maximoff from using the Infinity Stones to reshape the world. Ultimately, Kamala gave in and allowed Wanda to succeed. However, Kamala’s friend, Riri Williams, managed to break through the illusion and wake her up from Scarlet Witch’s control.

The conclusion of Marvel Zombies definitely hints at more story to come, but continuing the series feels predictable. Great horror often ends with a lingering sense of dread, and Marvel Zombies essentially eliminated its future possibilities with so many character deaths. While a second season could work, there’s one story that would likely make it even more successful than the first – and any Marvel Cinematic Universe fan would immediately recognize what it should be.

Marvel Zombies Season 2 Should Be A Prequel About the Zombie Apocalypse’s Start

Season 3 of Marvel Zombies could tackle a huge, mind-bending story about a fight with Wanda for control of everything – a perfect fit for a shorter final season, maybe one long episode or two regular ones. However, if Marvel Zombies gets another four episodes for Season 2, a prequel would be a smarter move. The first season starts five years after the zombie virus breaks out, so a Season 2 prequel could cover the first four years of the outbreak, with each episode focusing on a different year.

Marvel Animation’s approach with Zombies Season 2 opens up a lot of exciting possibilities. The show can now feature a much wider variety of characters than the first season. This includes the original Avengers, plus all the new heroes and characters introduced in Phase 4 of the MCU and beyond. They could even include characters like the X-Men, Black Knight, and Blade, who haven’t appeared in the live-action MCU yet. Plus, the show could explore different corners of the Marvel Universe, like the supernatural world seen in Werewolf By Night, and weave those elements into the story each season.

The initial story would likely focus on the dramatic collapse of the Avengers, who were Earth’s primary protectors. Another episode could explore the attempts of magical beings to stop Wanda Maximoff, and their ultimate failure. We might also see an episode dedicated to groups like the Inhumans, Eternals, and mutants, detailing how they responded to the zombie outbreak – whether they fought, escaped Earth, or were defeated. The series would culminate in the formation of a new Resistance, led by rising heroes such as Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, and Riri Williams. However, this hopeful rebellion would ultimately be crushed, leaving the few remaining survivors scattered and defeated.

It’s always risky making prequels – stories where the ending is already known can be hard to make exciting for audiences who want to be surprised. But Marvel Zombies has a lot of potential, especially because it’s set within the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the Multiverse Saga not quite hitting the mark with many of its alternate universe stories, focusing on larger, more impactful events feels essential for success.
