The long-awaited Season 2 of Hazbin Hotel has arrived, picking up Charlie’s journey to help demons find redemption. As the intense conflict in Hell continues – with the Vees scheming to exploit the Hotel – we also get a look at what’s happening in Heaven. The second episode, “Storyteller,” reveals secrets about Heaven’s structure and introduces a new character who completely changes how we view the angels. Following Sir Pentious’ surprising turn in Season 1, his arrival in Heaven sparks the introduction of a pivotal figure: The Speaker of God.
This powerful, godlike figure arrives to calm the chaos in the angelic realm and address Lute’s desire for revenge. Their calm but commanding demeanor immediately changes the atmosphere of the story. They listen intently to Sir Pentious’ tale, and their introduction hints at a connection to obscure biblical stories – a connection that could shape the entire future of the series.
The New Character’s Ambiguous Nature Hints at Their Divine Role

The initial design of The Speaker of God is stunning—they appear both otherworldly and immensely powerful, while remaining deliberately enigmatic. This being evokes a feeling of deep, ancient wisdom and serenity, a striking difference from the often-emotional and sometimes flawed angels we’ve seen previously. Though they have strikingly long eyelashes, the character isn’t defined by traditional gender. Broadway legend Liz Callaway provides the voice for The Speaker, offering a beautiful quality that perfectly matches their heavenly importance. As the one who communicates God’s will and listens to the unique story of a forgiven soul, The Speaker occupies a crucial role between the divine and the inhabitants of both Heaven and Hell. This position makes the fear and reverence of the angelic court incredibly believable, as they clearly see The Speaker as the closest being to God they’ll ever meet.
The arrival of the Speaker of God isn’t just a new character – it dramatically changes everything we thought we knew about the world of Hazbin Hotel. While the last story arc centered on the Exorcists and powerful angels like Sera and Emily, the Speaker’s appearance proves there’s an even higher power at play in Heaven. Sera, who was previously the highest-ranking angel, immediately acknowledges this new figure, hinting that the true source of Heaven’s power is far more distant and enigmatic than we realized. This change in the heavenly order makes figuring out who the Speaker of God really is a fascinating mystery.
The Speaker of God Is Very Likely the Chief of the Archangels

The character known as the Speaker of God might be inspired by Enoch, a prophet in Abrahamic stories who was taken to Heaven and became the powerful angel Metatron. There are clear connections between the Speaker of God in Hazbin Hotel and the story of Enoch. In many religious texts, Enoch/Metatron is described as the Scribe of God or the Voice of God – essentially, the one who delivers God’s messages to both Heaven and Earth. This role fits the show’s “Speaker of God” perfectly.
Metatron is usually shown as the most important archangel, and one of the few allowed to be directly before God. If the character known as the Speaker is actually Metatron (who was once Enoch), that would mean they’re more powerful than Sera. Sera appears to be more of a leader overseeing Heaven, but not a direct messenger for God. The character’s appearance – being neither male nor female and having a ghostly quality – fits with the idea of someone who was once human, then transformed into a purely divine and heavenly being, going beyond typical human traits and social norms like gender.
I’ve been diving deep into the theories about who the Speaker in Hazbin Hotel really is, and it’s so interesting! Some think it could be Gabriel, another messenger, but I’m really leaning towards Metatron. The idea that Metatron actually receives and understands God’s word directly? That puts them on a whole other level than just delivering messages. And here’s where it gets really cool: if the Speaker was once human, like the show suggests, it explains why they’re the one patiently listening to Sir Pentious’ story. They wouldn’t just be judging him, they’d get what it’s like to struggle as a mortal, and truly understand if someone deserves a chance at redemption. They’d be the perfect judge, honestly – someone who’s been there themselves!
This new character sets the stage for future seasons to explore the important angelic beings within the show’s religious context. We’ve already learned about Lucifer and his past within the angelic realm, which is key to the main character’s journey. Now, with the introduction of the Speaker of God, the show can naturally expand to include other powerful angels like Saint Peter, and, excitingly, even show Lucifer before he became the fallen angel – when he was a highly respected figure in Heaven.
The show’s entire story about saving souls now depends on a final decision from a very powerful being – someone close to the creator of everything. By introducing such a significant figure, Hazbin Hotel has made the consequences of what happens next much bigger than before. The show has moved past just showing demons trying to avoid being destroyed and is now asking bigger questions about whether anyone deserves a second chance, what redemption really means, and what fairness looks like from a divine perspective. The recent episode, “Storyteller,” proves that Hazbin Hotel’s journey is just beginning, and exploring the secrets of Heaven will lead to a fascinating story.
