Who is Regis in The Witcher season 4? Laurence Fishburne character explained

As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve always loved Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher world – it’s got everything you’d want: elves, dwarves, monsters, powerful mages, the works! And season 4 of The Witcher series doesn’t disappoint; it’s still absolutely brimming with all those classic fantasy elements.

The Netflix series has already shown many different monsters, but season 4 will debut something new: the powerful, original vampires.

We first saw vampires in season 2 with the introduction of the Bruxae. Geralt, now played by Liam Hemsworth after Henry Cavill, and Ciri met Vereena in the episode ‘A Grain of Truth.’ Fans of the original CD Projekt game will remember that the vampire world includes many different types, ranging from weaker to more powerful creatures.

The fourth movie will finally feature powerful, original vampires with the introduction of Regis, a beloved character played by Laurence Fishburne, known for his roles in The Matrix and John Wick.

I’m honestly wondering if we can really rely on him. More importantly, I’m worried about how his actions will affect everything – Ciri’s future, and the fate of the entire Continent. It’s a lot to consider!

Who is Regis in The Witcher?

Regis, whose full name is Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, is a very old and powerful vampire. He’s a steadfast friend to Geralt and travels with him as they search for Ciri.

He first appears halfway through the fifth book, Baptism of Fire, and becomes an important character for the rest of the series, including The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. He also plays a significant role in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s Blood and Wine expansion and is featured in the popular card game, Gwent.

Regis is a powerful, intelligent, and unexpectedly kind vampire who works as a barber-surgeon and healer in Dillingen. He meets Geralt and his friends while they’re traveling to Nilfgaard, encountering them in an ancient elven graveyard.

Regis is a powerful vampire, but he’s chosen to stop drinking blood. He used to be heavily addicted, and it caused a lot of trouble with the nearby villagers!

I agreed, even though I was completely unprepared and knew I’d have to learn as I went, trusting the process and adapting to whatever happened.

What are higher vampires in The Witcher?

In the world of the Witcher, vampires aren’t all the same. They’re divided into different types based on their power and nature. Lower vampires are more like wild, animalistic creatures, while higher vampires are much smarter, stronger, and often look very similar to humans.

The game features several types of lesser vampires, such as the Ekimma and Fleder. More powerful vampires include the Bruxae and Alps, as well as Katakans, Nekurats, and Mula.

Things get a little tricky here, as higher vampires are divided into two groups: those considered upper-class, and what are known as true higher vampires.

Both higher and lower vampires possess abilities like telepathy and shapeshifting, but higher vampires – such as Regis and Dettlaff van der Eretein – are significantly stronger. Only another higher vampire can truly destroy them. Witchers are capable of killing lower vampires with silver swords, but they are ineffective against the more powerful higher vampires.

Why is Regis important in The Witcher?

At first, Geralt was wary of the vampire Regis, but they quickly formed a bond. Regis became a key member of Geralt’s group of companions, joining Milva, Jaskier, Cahir, and the book-savvy Angoulême as they travelled together.

He was a valuable ally to the group, immediately offering them a safe haven with food and drink at his cottage. He also helped them through several perilous situations, including a difficult trial set by a fanatical priest during a witch hunt.

He goes so far as to rescue Geralt, and the two eventually become close friends and trusted companions.

It’s unusual for a powerful vampire like Regis to befriend, let alone rescue, a monster hunter like Geralt. This unexpected connection and Regis’s kindness challenge Geralt’s simple view of monsters, forcing him to reconsider his cynical worldview and look at them in a new light.

We’re excited to see Laurence Fishburne take on this popular character when he joins the show in season 4, and we’re confident he’ll do a great job.
