Netflix is expanding its Trainwreck collection on their streaming platform, and next up after films like Woodstock ’99 and Poop Cruise is a new addition titled The Actual Project X.
Drawing inspiration from the wild party depicted in the movie “Project X,” which featured Miles Teller, a tranquil Dutch town found itself caught up in an uncontrollable bash that spiraled into chaos.
13 years following the tumultuous incident, Netflix is delving deeper into the circumstances that led to the event going viral and the massive number (tens of thousands) of people who registered.
Read on to learn more about the real Project X and what happened on that night.
What was the real Project X? True story explained
Organizing a Sweet 16 celebration was no simple task, as evident by a Dutch teenager’s endeavor back in 2012 when she decided to throw a party for her friends in the town of Haren, Netherlands.
I accidentally made an event on Facebook public, thinking it was just for a small group. To my surprise, the event went viral, resulting in more than 30,000 people responding to the invitation for the party.
Despite a warning asking people not to attend, around 3,000 individuals showed up for the party instead. Before the festivities began, the birthday girl and her family had already left their residence.

The Groningen police representative shared that she had initially put up the invitation on Facebook and forwarded it to her personal contacts. These recipients then passed it along to their own friends, causing a chain reaction that quickly made the invite go viral online.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I found myself amidst chaos when the authorities had to intervene to maintain order. It turned out that night, 34 of us were detained following confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers.
During the disturbance, some individuals broke into stores, set a vehicle ablaze, and vandalized street signs. The mayor of Haren, Rob Bats, criticized this incident severely, stating: “Vile elements wreaked havoc in our town. An apparently innocent Facebook invitation for a gathering resulted in extensive rioting, property damage, theft, arson, and injuries right here in Haren.
