One of Sci-Fi’s Most Iconic Characters Is Being Brought Back to Life by ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Writer

It’s time to get excited for the return of Buck Rogers! After a long wait, a reboot of the classic sci-fi hero – who first appeared in 1929 – is finally moving forward. Deadline reports that Zeb Wells, one of the writers behind Deadpool & Wolverine, will be writing the screenplay. Legendary Entertainment is producing the film and plans to expand the Buck Rogers universe into a full-fledged franchise across multiple platforms.

The agreement with Legendary Entertainment began in 2020 and also involves producer Don Murphy, filmmaker Susan Montford, and Flint Dille. Details about the story written by Wells are being kept confidential, so it’s currently unclear what the new movie will be about. The character Rogers first appeared in the short story Armageddon 2419 A.D., published in the August 1928 issue of Amazing Stories. He has since been featured in various formats, including newspaper comics, comic books, radio dramas, films, and television series.

Paul Wells is currently enjoying success as a co-writer of the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie, and he was also a key creator of the hit Disney+ animated series Marvel Zombies, which premiered on September 24th and quickly became the platform’s most popular animated show. Beyond his work in film and television, Wells is a seasoned comic book writer, having penned stories for Marvel titles like The Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men, and Daredevil, as well as Snake Woman for Virgin Comics.

Who Should Play Buck Rogers?

NBC

Besides the movie currently in development at Legendary, the company revealed in 2020 plans for a new TV series, with comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan writing the scripts. It’s unclear if the series is still planned, but in 2021, Smokehouse Pictures was said to be co-producing. Reports suggested that George Clooney, a co-founder of Smokehouse, was interested in starring in the TV adaptation, though this hasn’t been confirmed.

Let’s move on to thinking about who could play this role in a movie. Right now, Glen Powell seems like a natural fit – he’s really gaining popularity. Nathan Fillion, with his quick humor and experience on Firefly, would also be great, as would Chris Pratt. Timothée Chalamet is another possibility, and it might be surprising, but Zac Efron could really pull it off, too.

It’s still very early in the process, so we’re just speculating about who will play the part. Whoever gets the role will have a big challenge, since Rogers is such a popular and iconic science fiction character. Everyone will be closely watching to see how they do.

If you’re unfamiliar with the classic sci-fi hero Buck Rogers, this project is a fantastic way to discover a truly fun and memorable character. We’ll share more updates as things progress.
