Supergirl Will Address DCU’s Controversial Superman Retcon, Teases Star

James Gunn’s Superman movie was a successful hit and a promising beginning for the new DC Universe. However, a particular plot twist caused some disagreement among fans. The twist revealed that Jor-El didn’t send Kal-El to Earth to be a symbol of hope, but to conquer the planet and rebuild Krypton. While some viewers were surprised by this darker take on Jor-El, who is usually seen as a virtuous figure, James Gunn has confirmed this storyline won’t be changed in future DCU films. The next movie in the franchise is expected to explore this twist further.

I was reading an interview with David Krumholtz – you know, Zor-El from Supergirl – over on Nerdtropolis, and he dropped some interesting hints about the upcoming movie. He’s being super careful not to spoil anything, but he said they’re really sticking close to the Woman of Tomorrow graphic novel. Basically, he’s excited to dive deeper into the history of Krypton and the El family, and to help tell that story. It sounds like we’re going to get a lot more background on where Supergirl comes from, which I’m totally here for!

Supergirl Can’t Ignore Superman‘s House of El Twist

Right after the movie Superman came out, fans noticed it created a storyline issue for the DC Universe regarding Supergirl. Unlike Superman, who was a baby when sent to Earth, Supergirl grew up on Krypton and witnessed its destruction. The creators have confirmed they’re using this backstory to explain why Supergirl is more hardened, as hinted at in her appearance at the end of Superman. This suggests Kara Zor-El likely knew something about her family’s plans for Earth, and it would be odd if her own movie didn’t address that connection. That’s why recent comments from actor David Krumholtz are promising.

The surprise reveal about Jor-El was central to Superman’s story, helping Kal-El understand his origins. While that element will likely be present in the upcoming Supergirl movie, it won’t be the main focus. Relying too heavily on the House of El’s plan for Earth as the core of Kara’s personal journey could feel repetitive. The goal is to create a new and compelling story, so Supergirl will probably be motivated by something different. However, audiences will still get to learn more about the House of El and its history within the DC Universe.

The way Krumholtz described things is interesting. In the movie Superman, Jor-El’s message came across as harsh – partly because Lex Luthor twisted it in the media – and made the House of El seem like power-hungry people. However, Supergirl seems poised to give us a more nuanced look at the House of El, showing that they weren’t simply good or bad. The film might explore the difficult choices Jor-El made, suggesting he acted with good intentions – trying to save Krypton – but ultimately made mistakes. It’s also possible Supergirl will reveal that not everyone in the House of El agreed with Jor-El’s plans, creating conflict within the family. Either way, Supergirl promises to give audiences a fuller understanding of Jor-El, building on the limited view we got in Superman.

Wow, that Peacemaker finale really left us wanting more, especially when it comes to the whole Salvation storyline! It’s a bit of a bummer we’ll have to wait until Man of Tomorrow in 2027 to find out what happens next, but honestly, it makes sense. Trying to fit that story into Supergirl just wouldn’t feel right. I’m actually really glad they’re using the movie to dig deeper into Krypton and connect it to the bigger DC Universe – that feels like a smart move. I’m relieved to hear it’ll still be a good movie on its own, but even more excited that it’ll tie into everything else happening in the DCU!
