DWTS’ Maks Chmerkovskiy Makes Public Plea to Jan Ravnik Amid Drama

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is open to having a new dance partner.

About a week after professional dancer Maks Chmerkovskiy and his wife, Peta Murgatroyd, publicly questioned the ballroom technique of new pro Jan Ravnik, Maks asked for a chance to meet with Ravnik in person. Ravnik had previously performed as a backup dancer for Taylor Swift.

In a video posted on October 30th, the 45-year-old apologized to Jan for upsetting them with his words. He explained he has more to say and would like to meet up – perhaps over coffee, if Jan has the time – to discuss things and resolve the issue.

He concluded by saying he hoped we’d not only get to know him better, but also leave feeling changed – and maybe even become friends.

Maks clarified that he does consider Jan a friend, and explained why some of his previous statements might have come across poorly.

Okay, so it might sound weird, but I think what he’s saying is, he’s just honest. Like, he’ll tell you exactly what he thinks, even if he doesn’t even know you! And that’s how he is with judging dance, too. It’s not about whether he likes someone or feels bad for them, it’s just… pure, logical analysis. He sees things differently, that’s all. It’s not personal, it’s just… his brain working! I love that about him, honestly.

Okay, so Maks – my absolute favorite, and the one who won Dancing With the Stars with Meryl Davis back in 2014 – finally talked about all the drama! It’s been insane seeing the backlash he’s getting ever since he and Peta – who’s a two-time champion, winning in 2012 and 2016, can you believe it?! – shared their thoughts on Peta’s podcast. Honestly, people are just being ridiculous!

Honestly, things like being called a ‘loser’ or reminded I’ve only won Dancing With the Stars once don’t bother me much. I’m my own harshest critic, and I know exactly where I stand. Plus, let’s be real, my family is incredibly talented! My brother Val has taken home the mirrorball trophy three times, and my sister-in-law Jenna has won twice. They’re just naturally better dancers than I am, and I’m super proud of them.

Maks acknowledged making “incredible mistakes” on the ABC show, like losing his temper with dance partners. However, he asked people to express their frustrations with him in a more constructive way.

“Let’s not defend someone by attacking somebody else,” he concluded. “That’s all I’m going to say.”

It was so sad to see Jan and Jen Affleck leave the competition this week, but I’ve been following Jan closely, and instead of responding to Maks’ criticisms, he’s been really focusing on all the amazing feedback he did get while he was on the show. It’s a classy move, honestly, and I admire him for staying positive.

After being eliminated on October 28th, Jan told TopMob News that he doesn’t tolerate hate or people who use it to get attention.

Indeed, he appreciated judge Derek Hough telling him he had a “fantastic” first season.

“It felt wonderful,” Jan shared. “Hearing him say that really touched me. I truly appreciate being loved, and I have a lot of respect for Derek, so his words meant a great deal to me.”
