Scream 7 Trailer Hints At Patrick Dempsey’s Return With Key Death

The first trailer for Scream 7 revealed who’s returning and who’s new alongside Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. However, Patrick Dempsey was noticeably absent, which is surprising considering earlier films suggested his character, Mark Kincaid, had started a family with Sidney after being introduced in the series.

So, things got really messy with the latest Scream movie, what with Melissa Barrera being let go and Jenna Ortega leaving. But amidst all that drama, we found out Joel McHale – you might remember him from Community – was joining the cast as Sidney’s husband, Mark Evans. Then, a couple of months later, Patrick Dempsey actually told everyone he was asked to come back as Mark Kincaid, but unfortunately, the California wildfires in 2025 meant his schedule just wouldn’t allow it. It’s a shame, I was hoping to see him back!

Fans were upset that Courteney Cox’s character, Gale Weathers, didn’t seem to be included in the last two Scream movies. This disappointment grew when Scott Foley, who played the villain Roman Bridger in a previous Scream film, was announced to return – many saw this as a chance to address the negative reception of that earlier sequel. However, the new trailer suggests that Cox might actually be back for the next installment after all.

Scream 7’s Trailer Seemingly Spoils Joel McHale’s Death

Like all the Scream movies, the trailer for Scream 7 is full of red herrings and hints about who the new Ghostface might be. It suggests a connection to Sidney Prescott’s past and features voice recordings from Matthew Lillard, who is returning as Stu. The trailer also gives a glimpse of the rising body count in the new film.

The trailer for Scream 7 strongly suggests that Mark McHale will be killed off. Around the trailer’s two-thirds mark, Mark, who is a police officer, is shown investigating a construction site when Ghostface attacks. The scene depicts Ghostface partially suffocating him with a plastic tarp before stabbing him, with blood splattering onto the camera.

The Scream franchise is known for misleading fans with deceptive marketing, like the flamethrower scene from the 2022 film which turned out to be a movie-within-a-movie (Stab 8). However, because the new killer’s motive appears so directly aimed at Sidney, it’s believable that the death shown in the trailer will actually happen.

One Mark’s Death Is Another Mark’s Opportunity

Neve Campbell recently shared that the “Mark” Sidney mentions in the 2022 Scream film was, to her, just a made-up name. This suggests she didn’t intend the reference to be about Dewey Riley’s partner, Kincaid. Campbell believes her character could easily have married someone with the same name, instead of someone connected to her past trauma.

After Scream 4 showed Sidney moving past being a victim and becoming a strong survivor, Mark Kincaid (Dempsey’s character) felt like a natural partner for her to start a family with. The groundwork for this relationship was actually laid in Scream 3, when Mark joined Sidney, Gale, and Dewey for a movie night at her home.

With four years having passed since her last appearance, Scream 7 might reveal that Sidney and Kincaid divorced and she remarried Mark Kincaid. This could then set up a storyline where Mark’s death brings Sidney and Mark Kincaid back together, as she deals with the aftermath of another Ghostface attack.

Whether or not Dermot Mulroney appears in Scream 7 likely depends on if they were able to film even a quick cameo with him. His busy schedule probably prevented a larger role, but instead of removing his character entirely or changing the story, the writers, Kevin Williamson and Guy Busick, may have found a different way to include him.
