Why Woody Harrelson Would “Never” Return for True Detective Sequel

The 64-year-old actor explained he doesn’t plan to reprise his role in True Detective with Matthew McConaughey. He believes their first season of the HBO show was a perfect conclusion to their story.

Woody firmly stated he wouldn’t consider a sequel when Dylan Dreyer asked him on Today, October 31st. He explained that he’s happy with how the original turned out and worries another season would ruin its quality.

Dylan reminded everyone that Matthew had expressed interest before, saying he’d participate if Woody and he both liked the idea. Woody just laughed and called Matthew amusing.

Kate Hudson, known for her role in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, isn’t the only one interested in revisiting detective work. The show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, revealed back in May that he has a story idea which could bring back Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as their characters, Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, respectively.

Nic Pizzolatto mentioned on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast in May that he has an idea for another story featuring the characters of Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. He hasn’t written anything yet, but he’s discussed the possibility with the actors and believes they’d be interested in revisiting those roles. Whether or not the project will actually happen remains uncertain.

Even though Woody wasn’t eager to work with Matthew again on the True Detective set, they remain very close friends. Their connection runs so deep that in 2023, they jokingly wondered if they could be brothers after Matthew’s mother, Mary McCabe, mentioned she used to know Woody’s father, the late Charles Harrelson, who was a convicted criminal.

In an April 2023 interview on the Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast, Matthew described the close relationship he shares with Woody as often blurring the lines between their identities. He explained that their families even mix them up – his kids call Woody ‘Uncle Woody,’ and Woody’s kids call him ‘Uncle Matthew.’ Matthew added that people frequently mistake him for Woody in photos, and vice versa.

He went on to share a story from a few years back in Greece. They were all chatting about family and how close everyone was when his mom suddenly said, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone immediately picked up on what she didn’t say – the implication was much more than just a simple statement of past acquaintance; it was a deliberately incomplete sentence with a lot of meaning behind it.

It came out that Matthew’s mother and the man believed to be his father, Jim, had split up briefly nine months before he was born, which Woody found odd. However, just like Woody had said no to revisiting True Detective, Matthew apparently refused to take a DNA test.

Wood explained on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in April 2023 that this situation is particularly difficult for the person involved, saying, “He feels like he’s losing a father.” Wood countered that he’s actually gaining new father figures – a different father and a brother.
