Before its release later this week, there’s some positive news about the box office potential for Superman. However, the upcoming film Jurassic World Rebirth could potentially cause issues for the superhero reboot. According to The Wrap, the projected domestic earnings for Superman remain unchanged from the initial estimates released a few weeks ago. The first DC Universe film is still expected to debut with earnings between $125-145 million domestically, which is a promising sign for the movie’s commercial success as it suggests that interest in the tentpole has remained steady despite the release of a high-profile blockbuster over the Fourth of July weekend.
In its initial five-day run worldwide, Jurassic World: Dominion Reborn raked in an impressive $323 million. Anticipating strong continued performance, it’s expected to perform well during its second weekend as well. According to The Wrap, the Jurassic franchise continues to be a crowd-pleaser overseas. The upcoming 2022 film, Jurassic World Dominion, surpassed films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Batman in Asian markets, including Japan. If this trend persists for Dominion Reborn, then Superman might find himself facing tough competition at international box offices.
The box office performance of Superman has been a popular topic of conversation all year. Earlier, there were concerns that the movie’s success could significantly impact Warner Bros. overall. However, such apprehensions appear to have diminished with the success of movies like A Minecraft Movie and Sinners from WB. Nevertheless, Superman remains crucial for the studio because it signifies the launch of a new shared universe. James Gunn, the director and co-head of DC Studios, has expressed that he will be content as long as the movie manages to recover its production cost.
As a movie critic, I must say that the recent release, “Jurassic World Rebirth,” has been sparking intriguing debates among cinema enthusiasts. Initially, predictions suggested it might have the smallest opening of all four Jurassic World films, given it premiered over an extended holiday weekend (while the previous three were released during traditional three-day weekends). However, it surpassed expectations and garnered a staggering $147.8 million domestically, establishing a new Fourth of July weekend box office record. Notably, its debut earnings even slightly outshone “Jurassic World Dominion”‘s opening of $145 million.
Although the movie Jurassic World Rebirth didn’t receive much praise from critics (currently rated 52% on Rotten Tomatoes), it seems that audiences have a more favorable opinion of it. This suggests that people are still eager for what the Jurassic Park franchise has in store, and it will be intriguing to observe how this affects the box office sales for Superman. As comic book adaptations have seemingly lost some of their appeal since the 2010s (with two Marvel films this year actually losing money), Superman is an exception, providing a fresh perspective on one of the world’s most iconic superheroes. Moreover, director James Gunn is well-liked by fans due to his successful Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and The Suicide Squad, so his involvement should attract viewers to the theater, especially if Superman receives positive reviews.
In an ideal scenario, there will be enough space at the cinemas for both highly anticipated movies, “Jurassic World” and “Superman,” to thrive simultaneously. While it’s possible that “Jurassic World” may slightly impact “Superman”‘s overseas box office earnings, the DCU should still have a robust beginning. If “Superman”‘s box office predictions had dropped after the release of “Rebirth,” it would have raised concerns as it might suggest audiences weren’t ready for another big studio blockbuster so soon. Overall, this is good news for “Super Fantastic World” since both of July’s major releases are expected to be huge successes.
