Sean Bean, the BAFTA-winning actor known for roles like Boromir in The Lord of the Rings and Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, is now starring in a fresh adaptation of a well-known story that’s quickly becoming popular with streaming audiences.
As a big fan of historical dramas, I was excited to hear about the new Robin Hood series that premiered on MGM+ on November 2nd. And wow, it’s already a hit! According to FlixPatrol, it quickly became the most-watched show on the platform in the US. I’m especially intrigued by the casting – Rowan Atkinson as the Sheriff of Nottingham is a brilliant choice, and Jake Patten seems perfect as Robin Hood. Connie Nielsen as Eleanor of Aquitaine adds some serious star power, too. It’s currently tied with Outlander: Blood of My Blood for the top spot, beating out shows like From. The series is the work of creators Jonathan English and John Glenn, who also wrote the scripts, so it’s clearly a passion project for them.
The new series Robin Hood tells a fresh story about the legendary hero. It begins after the Norman invasion of England, where Rob, the son of a Saxon forester, and Marian, the daughter of a Norman lord, fall in love. Together, they fight for fairness and liberty – Rob by leading a group of outlaws in the forest, and Marian by secretly working against corruption within the Norman courts. The show also stands out for its unique approach, incorporating elements of folklore, ancient beliefs, and religious symbolism from the very beginning.
As a huge cinema fan, I’ve seen a lot of Robin Hood adaptations, and this new one really intrigued me. It seems the creators deliberately cast Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham because of his previous roles – especially Boromir from Lord of the Rings. They really leaned into that established persona. The writer pointed out that many viewers, like me, will instantly see Boromir again in this new role – or even Lieutenant Colonel Sharpe if you remember his earlier work! This Sheriff isn’t just a villain; he’s a clever, grumpy strategist, and the show smartly uses Bean’s history to make him a really compelling character, completely different from Alan Rickman’s more theatrical take.
What’s Next for Sean Bean?
Before 2025 is over, Bean will appear in two more projects, starting with his recently released film, Anemone, directed by Ronan Day-Lewis and currently available to rent or buy digitally. He’s also voicing a character in an upcoming animated movie alongside Jack Lowden and Hayley Atwell. This film is based on the 2000 AD comic book, created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, and is expected to be released later this year.
The new show Robin Hood, from Lionsgate Television, will premiere new episodes on Sundays on AMC+ until December 28th. It’s currently unknown if the show will be renewed for another season.
