Screamer: Devs Detail the “Eco” Combat Racing Loop, and How to Decimate Opponents

Milestone’s new developer video explains the central ‘Eco’ system in Screamer. It features two connected meters that create a constant challenge: players must balance going fast with staying alive. Players can build up ‘Sync’ automatically and quickly by playing well – including perfectly timed gear shifts at peak RPM, or by drafting behind other racers.

Use Spend Sync to gain a bonus for well-timed actions, or to protect yourself from attacks. Building up Sync also creates Entropy, which powers your offensive abilities.

Entropy introduces two ways to battle. Strike is a quick, powerful dash that can instantly defeat opponents. Overdrive uses your entire energy bar for a fast, protected boost that knocks out anyone you hit, but once the protection wears off, even bumping into a wall can destroy your car.

The team approaches the competition like a multi-stage race. They start cautiously while establishing a coordinated system, then adjust their strategy – balancing defense with speed – based on the current situation. Finally, they aim to use the pressure they’ve built to secure decisive victories.

Ultimately, Screamer isn’t just a racing game that feels like older arcade titles. It cleverly combines speed, defense, and attacking into one system, making it feel more like a fast-paced fighting game where managing your resources is key to victory.
