Hulu has renewed the King of the Hill revival for three more seasons, and the show has a chance to revisit a particularly sad moment in Bill Dauterive’s past. King of the Hill returned this summer after a 15-year hiatus, streaming new episodes on Hulu. The revival is set nearly ten years after the original series ended on FOX, and it shows how the characters’ lives have changed.
The fourteenth season of King of the Hill showed significant changes for Bill. Although the COVID-19 pandemic initially made his life more difficult, Hank’s return to Arlen eventually helped him improve. However, the new episodes haven’t acknowledged a past romance of Bill’s; the character was completely written out of the story and is now mentioned only in passing when it’s revealed they have died off-screen.
King of the Hill Kills Off Bill’s Big Romance

During the original run of King of the Hill, Bill unexpectedly began a romantic relationship with Kahn Souphanousiphone’s mother, Laoma. In the Season 7 episode “Maid in Arlen,” Laoma moved in with Kahn and eventually fell in love with Bill. Despite Kahn’s attempts to separate them, the episode ended with Bill and Laoma happily acknowledging their future together. However, after a brief mention of their happiness in the following episode, Laoma was never seen or mentioned again throughout the rest of the series.
The situation became even more complicated in the fourteenth season of King of the Hill, with the episode “Kahn-scious Uncoupling.” Kahn revealed that his mother had passed away and still resented Bill for having dated her. This made Bill’s situation much worse; the show not only took away his happy ending shortly after giving it to him, but also killed off his partner without ever showing them together on screen. This development actually highlights the gap in the original series regarding Laoma’s absence, making it feel like a bigger plot inconsistency.
What Should King of the Hill Do With Bill?

After this, the main question is how King of the Hill will handle Bill’s grief. The episode confirms Kahn’s mother has passed away, but Bill doesn’t openly acknowledge the loss. He doesn’t get a chance to show how much he cared for Laoma, and the focus remains on Kahn’s continued longing for his former wife, Lenore. If the show keeps portraying Bill in such a sad light, it needs to offer some hope for the future.
It’s understandable that keeping Bill in a consistently unlucky situation is funnier for the show, King of the Hill. However, what fans really appreciate about the series is how realistically it portrays characters growing and changing. Bill deserves a more positive conclusion, and the show now has the opportunity to acknowledge his past happiness with his late wife. Simply having Bill mention this on screen would be a significant and welcome development for his character.
