Katherine Heigl isn’t paging her and Josh Kelley’s kids.
One reason the former Grey’s Anatomy star and her spouse decided to restrict the use of phones for their children – Naleigh (16), Adalaide (13), and Joshua (8) – was because their academic grades began to decline.
In an interview with People on July 5th, Katherine admitted, “We’ve consistently maintained that phones should be off at bedtime, but there were instances of sneaking devices, staying up too late, and experiencing poor sleep quality, followed by being irritable the next day. It was simply unhealthy.
In fact, she described her kids as “little addicts” when it came to their devices.
As a lifestyle expert, I understand the dilemma many parents face when it comes to giving their children access to technology at an early age. Initially, my partner and I, like the “Amazing” singer, had planned to wait until our daughter turned 16 before gifting her a phone. However, in today’s fast-paced world, it has become increasingly challenging to keep up with the communication needs that come with everyday life. So, we made the decision to provide her with a phone at an earlier age, ensuring she can stay connected and safe while navigating this digital landscape.
Katherine explained that her daughter, Naleigh, was borrowing friends’ phones to use instead of having her own. Since she had no way of communicating independently, she often missed out on cafeteria conversations and gossip among other kids. This prompted Katherine to think about finding a balance between giving Naleigh a phone and keeping her connected without overdoing it.
As a committed partner, I recognized the need for maintaining a balanced relationship, and one aspect of this balance involved establishing more defined limits on our screen time to ensure we were spending quality time together.
The actress from “27 Dresses” clarified that their devices aren’t accessible on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Sundays. They are granted access to the device after lunch on Saturdays. As for weekdays, they receive it after school, homework, and until bedtime (starting at 8 p.m.). The access is available only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
She pointed out that the children are not allowed to bring their phones to their rooms at night, but rather they should place them for charging in her and Josh’s bedroom instead.
Initially challenging, Katherine later disclosed to TopMob News that the decision led to her children becoming significantly more imaginative.
In April, she shared that Naleigh has been spending more time baking and cooking as I’ve implemented a rule: She doesn’t receive her phone on three days of the week, and only after school hours. Additionally, Adalaide often expresses her aspiration to become an actress.
Additionally, this development has strengthened the familial ties, notably fostering a closer relationship between Adalaine and her younger sibling.
Adalaide strums on her electric guitar while Joshua taps on his drum set, and they’ve been making music together. Their performance is surprisingly good, and it’s quite touching to see them engaged in an activity beyond their screens. It’s beautiful to witness the shared enthusiasm and interest they have for something other than their electronic devices.

As a lifestyle expert, I can attest that this particular activity or practice has been instrumental in fostering a stronger connection within my own family. Particularly, it’s been remarkable to observe the growing bond between my daughter, Adalaide, and her younger brother.
I’ve been teaming up with my brother on music lately, and it’s an incredible experience. Adalaide is masterfully strumming the electric guitar, while Joshua is flawlessly handling the drums. It’s truly a sight to behold, as they immerse themselves in this shared passion away from their screens. Their enthusiasm for something other than their devices just makes it all the more captivating.
