Sony has just released a major update for its PlayStation Portal handheld – cloud streaming! For almost a year, Sony has been testing the ability to stream select PS5 games directly to the Portal via the cloud, instead of requiring a connection to your PS5 console. This feature is available to PlayStation Plus Premium members and is now officially available after a lengthy beta period.
A new update is rolling out today, November 6th, for the PlayStation Portal handheld. The biggest addition is cloud streaming, allowing you to play thousands of PS5 games directly on the device. Many of these games are included with PS Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog subscriptions, making those subscriptions even more appealing. You can find a complete list of compatible games on the PlayStation Blog.
The biggest new feature for the PlayStation Portal is Cloud Streaming, but Sony is also improving other parts of the device. They’ve redesigned the user interface with three easy-to-switch tabs. This makes it simpler to move between playing games streamed from your PlayStation 5 console and playing games through the Cloud.
Sony has recently added a few helpful features to the PS Portal. These include 3D Audio support and the ability to lock the device with a passcode. Players can also now access in-game stores while streaming games. While these updates likely won’t convince anyone to buy a PS Portal on their own, they’re great improvements that show Sony is listening to its fans.
This is easily the most significant update the PS Portal has received since its release in 2023. If you’ve been considering buying one, now is the absolute best time to do so.
