The 1990s were a fantastic time for family films, and 1996 was no exception. It brought us many now-classic movies like 101 Dalmatians, Space Jam, James and the Giant Peach, and Muppet Treasure Island, making it a particularly successful year for family entertainment. These films remain popular with audiences today, and now you can stream some of the best from 1996 on Peacock for a nostalgic family movie night.
Peacock added the beloved film Matilda to its streaming lineup in November. Based on Roald Dahl’s classic book, the movie stars Mara Wilson as a gifted six-year-old who uses her powers to overcome challenges from her difficult family and a cruel headmistress. Matilda became available on November 1st, but like other titles on Peacock, it may not be available indefinitely as the streaming service regularly updates its content.
Matilda Still Holds Up Today
Even though it’s been almost 30 years since the movie Matilda came out, it’s still just as popular as ever. A big reason for its lasting appeal is that it’s a movie the whole family can enjoy. It tells a heartwarming and inspiring story with lots of funny moments for kids, but it also doesn’t shy away from important issues like bullying and being neglected.
The film Matilda is a timeless classic that many people enjoy revisiting, often discovering new things to love with each viewing. It’s gained even more fans and critical praise over time, thanks to memorable performances – especially from Pam Ferris as Miss Trunchbull and Embeth Davidtz as Miss Honey, who has become a beloved character. Considered a defining film of the 1990s and one of the greatest family movies, Matilda remains incredibly popular today. In fact, it’s the fourth most-logged film from 1996 on the Letterboxd platform, significantly outperforming other family films from that year, like Space Jam, which ranks at number 13.
What’s New on Peacock?
Peacock has added a bunch of new movies for subscribers! Starting November 1st, you can stream Matilda along with family favorites like several Despicable Me movies, The Croods, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, The Cat In The Hat, Little Rascals, Marmaduke, Nanny McPhee, and Paddington. They’ve also added classics like the original Jurassic Park trilogy, Bring It On, Dunkirk, The Intern, and Les Miserables.
