One Piece Remake Gets Disappointing Update for Its Anime Future

The new anime adaptation of One Piece, based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga series, was set to start from scratch, exciting fans worldwide. However, during Anime Expo 2025, they received disheartening news about its upcoming developments over the weekend. Just this year, One Piece marked the 25th anniversary of both its anime and manga franchises with numerous new projects underway. Among these, the announcement of a fresh anime adaptation by WIT Studio, known for producing the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, Spy x Family, Ranking of Kings, and many other acclaimed series, sparked immediate interest.

Initially slated for production in late 2023, The One Piece has seen gradual updates from WIT Studio. However, due to scarce information since its initial release, fans are eagerly anticipating more glimpses of the series. This desire persisted even at Anime Expo 2025, but unfortunately, no new details were revealed during WIT Studio and Production I.G.’s panel at the event. However, there’s a glimmer of hope as hinted by WIT Studio President George Wada.

One Piece Remake News Coming Next Year?

At this year’s Anime Expo 2025, I was part of the excited crowd at the Production I.G. and WIT Studio panel, where our beloved President George Wada fielded questions about the upcoming One Piece remake anime. When a fan inquired about its current status, Wada initially left us hanging with “We can’t discuss One Piece just yet.” However, he did provide a glimmer of hope, hinting that we could expect more news by next year: “You’ll hear from us soon!” This statement sent shockwaves through the audience, suggesting that the remake might be coming our way much sooner than anticipated.

Based on the current information about “One Piece”, it’s shaping up nicely as its crew is already busy working on it for a Netflix streaming release. The upcoming “One Piece” movie will be directed by Masashi Koizuka under WIT Studio. Hideaki Abe will serve as assistant director, Taku Kishimoto will handle the series composition, and Kyoji Asano and Takatoshi Honda will provide character designs and act as chief animation directors. Yasuhiro Kajino will be in charge of creature design, Eri Taguchi will serve as prop designer, Ken Imaizumi and Shuhei Fukuda will be action directors, and Tomomori Kuroda will act as art director.

How One Piece’s Remake Will Change the Anime

In a departure from Toei Animation’s initial anime adaptation, director Masashi Koizuka plans to tackle the darker themes found in the original “One Piece” manga. During One Piece Day 2024, he expressed his admiration for the manga’s complex and thought-provoking topics, such as war and race, which make it appealing to readers of all ages. Koizuka believes these intricate themes are what makes “One Piece” so captivating.

The director emphasized that each character has a rich backstory and intriguing personal histories. For instance, Nami’s struggle leads her to seek Luffy’s aid when she’s overwhelmed. Despite the early stages of the narrative, he finds this engaging and wishes to preserve it as closely as possible from the original manga. He also expressed a deep passion for showcasing the manga’s most compelling aspects, ensuring that the adaptation will reflect these differences.
