It’s been over thirty-five years since the mischievous Gremlins last appeared in theaters with Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and many fans thought a third movie would never happen. But good news for Gremlins lovers: Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed Gremlins 3! And that’s not all – the studio has also announced the movie’s release date and revealed some of the key people working on this unexpected sequel.
Variety reports that Gremlins 3 is officially scheduled for a theatrical release on November 19, 2027. The film will also bring back Steven Spielberg as an executive producer. However, Joe Dante, who directed the first two Gremlins movies, won’t be returning to direct. Instead, Chris Columbus, known for his work on the Harry Potter films, will direct the third installment. Currently, plot details and casting information haven’t been announced, but updates are expected soon.
The Gremlins’ Recent History
It’s been a while since the mischievous Gremlins were last in theaters – the 1990s film Gremlins 2 was their last big-screen appearance. However, the Gremlins haven’t disappeared completely. In 2023, the animated series Gremlins: Secrets of The Mogwai premiered on HBO Max, expanding the story from North America to China. The show featured the beloved Gizmo and introduced new characters as he searched for his family. After two seasons, the show’s continuation is uncertain, as a third season hasn’t been announced. With a third Gremlins movie also in the works, it seems likely that Secrets of The Mogwai has a better chance of returning now.
Beyond the Gremlins films and the recent animated series, Gizmo has remained a recognizable figure in pop culture. In a fun moment, both Gizmo and actor Zach Galligan appeared together in a Mountain Dew commercial, revisiting their characters years after the original movie. Gizmo has also shown up in several video games, including Gremlins 2: The New Batch The Video Game, Gremlins: Stripe Vs. Gizmo, Gremlins Unleashed, Gremlins Revenge, and Gremlins Gizmo. More recently, both Gizmo and Stripe were playable characters in the now-discontinued game, Multiversus. The Gremlins even experienced a resurgence thanks to a memorable sketch on Key & Peele, which humorously imagined the making of a new Gremlins sequel.
