A third Red Dead Redemption game could have finally solved a long-standing mystery for fans of Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar Games has a reputation for creating amazing games, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is arguably their most impressive achievement. It successfully combined a captivating, cinematic story with a vast, immersive, and groundbreaking open world. The game continues to be popular and is still widely discussed. While a remastered version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is a possibility, we’ll have to wait to see if that happens.
For a long time, players have been curious about a potential Red Dead Redemption 3, particularly after the writer of the series, Dan Houser, left the company. Red Dead Redemption 2 felt like a satisfying conclusion to the story of John and Arthur, or a fresh starting point, completing the arc of the first two games. While their story feels finished, Rockstar could create another prequel, though that might feel unnecessary. There was a general expectation of a future game while Dan Houser was still involved.
Red Dead Redemption 3 Would’ve Revealed Gavin’s Fate
During an appearance on the Lex Fridman podcast, Dan Houser, a former writer for Rockstar Games, discussed a lingering mystery in Red Dead Redemption 2. In the game, players encounter a character named Nigel who desperately searches for his friend, Gavin. Despite extensive searching, Gavin is never found, leading to many fan theories. Some players believe Gavin is deceased or has simply disappeared, while others speculate that Nigel suffers from a mental health condition like a split personality.
According to Houser, the writers didn’t fully resolve the story of Gavin, intending to revisit it in a later game. While Gavin was based on a real person, they couldn’t agree on whether he was dead or still alive. Houser thought they’d explore this ambiguity further, possibly by bringing Gavin back or revealing that he deliberately left Nigel, whom Houser describes as unstable.
There’s a good chance Red Dead Redemption 3 will eventually be made, even if Sam Houser isn’t involved, according to his recent comments. It’s currently unknown if Gavin and Nigel will be part of the project when it does happen. Regardless, it’s interesting to learn the development team enjoys subtly hinting at future games, sometimes through minor details that players might miss.
