Disney Reportedly Planning Live-Action Remake of 66-Year-Old Animated Classic (With A Divisive Twist)

Despite the disappointing performance of the recent Snow White remake, Disney is continuing with its plan to create live-action versions of its animated films. Production on a live-action Tangled movie has been restarted, and Moana is still scheduled for release next summer. Now, Disney is also considering a live-action adaptation of one of its oldest and most beloved animated movies, a decision that may not please all Disney fans.

Disney is reportedly planning a live-action remake of its 1959 animated film, Sleeping Beauty. According to entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, the new movie, currently titled Aurora, will be a fresh take on the classic story of Princess Aurora, which originated from a French fairy tale written in 1697. Unlike the original, which was set in 14th-century France, this remake will be set in Mexico. Disney has not yet confirmed the project.

The Change to Sleeping Beauty Is a Risky Move, but It Could Pay Off

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is a beloved classic, and the planned changes to the story are quite bold. Shifting the setting will likely be controversial for dedicated fans, as the original 1959 film was deeply rooted in medieval European style – influencing everything from the artwork and animation to the characters’ appearances and the music. Disney has faced some criticism before when trying to update its classic films for modern viewers, like with the recent changes to the dwarfs and Snow White’s story in the live-action remake.

Honestly, I think switching up the setting could be exactly what Disney’s live-action remakes need. Let’s face it, a lot of fans – myself included – are starting to feel like they’re just repeating the same formula, and it feels more about making money than telling a truly new story. I’d love to see them take some real creative chances! Something like setting Aurora in Mexico feels brilliant because it opens up this amazing opportunity to explore the fairy tale through a completely different cultural lens, drawing on rich Mexican culture and mythology. It’s a way to make the story feel fresh and exciting again.

The story of Sleeping Beauty has been successfully reimagined recently. Disney’s 2014 film, Maleficent, retold the classic tale from the villain’s point of view. Starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, the movie was a huge financial success, earning over $758 million globally and becoming one of the year’s biggest hits. It was popular enough to get a sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, in 2019.

Disney hasn’t officially announced a movie about Aurora, so details about the story and how it might differ from the original animated film are still unknown. The original 1959 animated movie is available to stream on Disney+.
