The first trailer for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, simply titled Michael, is now available, and it’s generating a lot of excitement. The movie, about the life of the ‘King of Pop,’ faced some delays – originally planned for April 2025, its release was moved to October 2025 and then again to April 2026. Now, with the April 2026 date confirmed, the studio is beginning to promote the film, highlighting Jaafar Jackson – Michael’s nephew – who will portray his uncle on screen.
Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming film, Michael, will tell the story of the pop star’s journey to fame, starting with his early years in the Jackson 5 and continuing through his successful solo career, up to his death in 2009. The trailer opens by acknowledging the film’s lengthy production process, with a line from Quincy Jones (played by Kendrick Sampson): “I know you’ve been waiting a long time for this. The tracks are made, the songs are ready. Let’s take it from the top.”
The video heavily features Jackson’s popular music and biggest songs, with short clips of tracks like “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” and “Billie Jean,” and a preview of the “Thriller” music video. It also showcases memorable moments from his concerts, including Jaafar Jackson performing the moonwalk.
Michael‘s Trailer Suggests It’ll Be A Guaranteed Hit
The trailer for the upcoming Michael movie wisely emphasizes the singer’s most famous songs. Jaafar, who bears a strong resemblance to Michael Jackson and appears to capture his essence convincingly, suggests this film will be a hit with audiences. As one of the most iconic figures in pop culture, Michael Jackson’s story is almost guaranteed to be a box office success. With a reported budget of $155 million (according to Variety), the film is expected to easily recoup its costs. While biopics can be unpredictable, this one has the potential to perform similarly to Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $910 million and remains the highest-grossing music biopic ever.
Getting this film made hasn’t been easy. Beyond delays caused by Michael Jackson himself, there were also substantial reshoots of the movie’s ending. According to a report in Puck, these changes were necessary because the film’s portrayal of Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of sexual abuse in 1993, presented legal issues – the movie reportedly couldn’t legally show his story. However, Variety later reported a source denying this claim. It’s still uncertain how the film will address the controversies and allegations surrounding Jackson.
I’m really excited about this Michael Jackson biopic! It stars Colman Domingo and Nia Long as his parents, Joe and Nancy, which is fantastic casting. Miles Teller is playing Michael’s lawyer, John Branco, too. It’s currently set to hit theaters on April 26th, 2026. I heard they were even thinking about releasing it as a two-part movie because there’s so much story to tell, but we’ll have to wait and see if that actually pans out.
