When Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove came out 25 years ago, it didn’t immediately become a blockbuster. However, over time, many viewers have discovered it’s one of Disney’s most hilarious and memorable films. It’s become a beloved cult classic, and Disney is celebrating its anniversary with a long-awaited 4K Blu-ray release – and even more exciting things to come.
As a huge fan of The Emperor’s New Groove, I’m thrilled to share that it’s coming to 4K Blu-ray on December 9th! But here’s the really exciting news: if you’re a superfan like me, you can actually see it on the big screen! It’s playing at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood from November 21st to 24th – the very same theater where it premiered back in 2000!

I’ve always been fascinated by the story behind The Emperor’s New Groove. It’s amazing to me that the movie we all love actually came about because of studio interference! Originally, it was a much different film called Kingdom of the Sun, directed by Roger Allers. Disney executives felt it was too serious in tone, especially after films like Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame hadn’t performed as well as they’d hoped. They almost completely abandoned the project, but thankfully, it led to the hilarious, fast-paced movie we know and adore today!
When Mark Dindal became director, he dramatically changed the movie into the hilarious buddy comedy it is today. Initially, the story was inspired by “The Prince and the Pauper,” with the villain Yzma plotting to extinguish the sun to become young again. Instead, we got the wonderfully quirky character of Yzma, voiced by Eartha Kitt, accidentally turning Emperor Kuzco (David Spade) into a llama. The film also would have featured a more serious companion for Kuzco, rather than the lovable, but not very bright, Kronk (Patrick Warburton), who many fans consider the best part of the movie.
Disney was aiming to create something different from their typical movies, like The Lion King. Considering how things are going with Disney films now, it might be a good idea for them to try that approach again.
