The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become increasingly focused on characters with overwhelming power levels, creating some tricky storytelling problems. For example, the Hulk was sidelined during a major battle and then weakened in a later film. Captain Marvel was so strong that the writers had to keep her off-world to give Thanos a chance in Avengers: Infinity War. More recently, the powerful Eternals have largely disappeared after their initial appearance, and Sentry, another incredibly powerful character, was given a limiting fear to balance things out. Now, it looks like Marvel might be introducing a mutant with the highest possible power level – even before fully establishing the X-Men.
The recent Disney+ debut of The Fantastic Four: First Steps may have revealed Franklin Richards, who could be the first Omega-level mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the details are a bit complex.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps Brings Franklin Richards to the MCU

The movie Fantastic Four: First Steps became available on Disney+ on November 5th. Now, those who didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters can experience the introduction of Marvel’s First Family to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As teased at the end of Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four—including young Franklin Richards—are here and poised to significantly impact the MCU.
Reports suggest the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie will pit two Avengers teams – the former Thunderbolts and Sam Wilson’s Avengers – against a combined force of the Fantastic Four and X-Men, both arriving from alternate universes. However, if the movie follows established Marvel comics, the X-Men won’t be the only mutants involved. Franklin Richards, a long-time character in the comics, is considered one of the most powerful mutants ever created.
This storyline could continue in a future movie, hinted at by the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which showed Doctor Doom speaking with young Franklin Richards. Doom is searching for someone incredibly powerful to help him build Battleworld for Avengers: Secret Wars. Because the Molecule Man hasn’t appeared in live-action Marvel films yet (only in the animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur), Franklin Richards—a uniquely powerful mutant—could be the one to fill that role.
Is Franklin Richards Really An Omega-Level Mutant?

Even if Franklin Richards isn’t considered an Omega-level mutant in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s still plausible. Marvel recently changed Franklin’s backstory, revealing he lost his powers after overexerting himself in a fight. When he sought help from Krakoa, Professor X refused him entry, claiming Franklin was never a mutant to begin with. Xavier believes Franklin desperately wanted to belong so much that he altered his DNA to appear as one, essentially fabricating his mutant status. This could be seen as a false claim, but Franklin was so driven that he convinced himself it was real.
Despite everything, Franklin remains incredibly powerful within the Marvel universe. Originally from the Negative Zone in the comics, he inherited immense cosmic power from his parents. He can literally create entire worlds and civilizations – many planets across the multiverse were formed by his thoughts, and their inhabitants worship him as a god because he created them. This ability could be a huge advantage for Doctor Doom in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
In the movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Franklin Richards wasn’t born in the Negative Zone as some might expect. Instead, he was born in space while returning from Galactus’s ship, hinting that his powers could be connected to his parents. The film also showed a scene suggesting Franklin brought his mother back to life after fighting Galactus. Furthermore, Galactus saw Franklin as someone who could help him, or even take his place, and Doctor Doom is clearly interested in the child. While it’s uncertain if Franklin will be established as an incredibly powerful Omega-level mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s poised to become the most powerful character in that universe regardless.
