Most new fantasy shows ask viewers to invest their time and imagination, promising a rich story, interesting characters, and a sense of magic. When a show earns praise and a loyal following, getting cancelled too soon feels like a real letdown – the story is cut off not because it was bad, but because of business choices, leaving viewers with unanswered questions. However, a different kind of disappointment happens when a show starts with a fantastic idea but fails to deliver, losing its way with poor writing or an inconsistent style.
Both of these situations make a strong argument for bringing a show back, but for different reasons. If a well-regarded show was cancelled before its time, a reboot can finally explore its full story and give it the ending it deserved. And if a show had potential but didn’t quite work, a reboot offers a chance to fix its problems. The original series can serve as a lesson, letting a new team build the version of the story it always should have been.
5) Willow

I absolutely loved seeing Warwick Davis return as Willow in the 2022 Disney+ series! It was meant to be a continuation of the original, magical film from 1988, and it really did bring that world back to life. The show built on everything George Lucas and Ron Howard created, and it was fun to meet a whole new group of heroes on a mission to save a prince. Though, I think it tried a bit too hard to appeal to younger audiences with its humor and feel – sometimes it didn’t quite match the grand, classic fantasy of the original movie.
I was really disappointed when Willow was canceled after just one season – it definitely wasn’t a show everyone loved, and it felt so abrupt. Then, to have it completely removed from Disney+ was a huge letdown! I truly believe a reboot could work, though. If they really embraced the grand fantasy adventure of the original movie, it could be amazing. Starting fresh, without having to worry about connecting to the story thirty years later, would let them rebuild the world and give us the captivating, magical experience we all remember and want to see again.
4) Shadow and Bone

Netflix’s Shadow and Bone is a series based on the bestselling Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo. It was a bold project, weaving together stories from multiple books into one. The show centers on Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young mapmaker who unexpectedly develops a powerful ability that might be the key to saving her country, which is ravaged by war. Alongside Alina’s story, the series also introduces the Crows – a group of clever and captivating criminals led by the resourceful Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter).
Despite positive reviews for its detailed world and compelling characters, the show Shadow and Bone was canceled after two seasons, ending several storylines abruptly. This also meant the planned spin-off based on Six of Crows was dropped. Considering the extensive source material and dedicated fans, the Grishaverse still has potential for a new adaptation. A reboot could be successful by focusing on adapting one book series at a time, giving the complex plot and popular characters the attention they deserve.
3) The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Before the classic 1982 movie The Dark Crystal, the Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance amazed audiences with its incredible visuals. Using stunning puppets and practical effects, the show revisits the world of Thra and tells the story of three Gelflings who discover a dark secret about their Skeksis rulers, leading them to start a rebellion.
Everyone loved The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, praising its incredible visuals and captivating story – it even won an Emmy! Sadly, despite the positive reception, the show was canceled after only one season, likely because it was very expensive to make. It’s a real shame for fantasy fans, as Age of Resistance was truly artistic and offered a unique world. A continuation of the story, perhaps as an animated series or a new live-action show, is needed to fully explore this imaginative universe.
2) Kaos

Netflix’s Kaos offered a fresh, darkly funny take on Greek mythology, portraying the gods as a flawed and insecure family of powerful celebrities. The series focused on Zeus (played by Jeff Goldblum) who becomes increasingly paranoid after noticing a wrinkle, believing it signals a prophecy about his downfall. Though the show was a visually striking and satirical blend of ancient myths and modern worries, Netflix canceled it just one month after it launched.
I was really disappointed when Netflix cancelled Kaos after just one season. I heard the creator, Charlie Covell, actually had a plan for three seasons, but the show didn’t get enough viewers at first. It’s such a shame because Kaos felt so fresh and different – a really clever and funny take on a world we thought we knew, and the main actor was fantastic! The idea was just too good to leave after one season, and I really hope someone else picks it up so we can see the full story told. It’s truly inventive and deserves to be finished.
1) The Dresden Files

The 2007 Syfy television series The Dresden Files was based on the popular book series by Jim Butcher and seemed poised for success. The books expertly combine detective fiction with urban fantasy, centering on Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only wizard available for hire. While the show, starring Paul Blackthorne, managed to capture some of the fun, self-contained adventures from the books, it didn’t fully satisfy existing fans. It also differed significantly from the source material, changing important aspects of characters and making the complex magic system simpler.
Despite having a strong concept, the TV show The Dresden Files lasted only one season because it didn’t attract enough viewers and was expensive to make. If the show had been a more accurate and atmospheric adaptation of the books, capturing their detective-noir feel and intricate characters, it could have become a major success.
