The second season of the show premiered with its first four episodes on Netflix on November 4th, and it’s quickly become popular, rising in the platform’s rankings.
Currently, Squid Game: The Challenge is the fifth most popular show on Netflix in the United States, according to FlixPatrol. Inspired by the hit South Korean drama Squid Game, this new series turns the show’s thrilling challenges into a real-life competition where 456 players are vying for a $4.56 million prize.
Launched in 2023, The Challenge quickly became a popular show around the world. It was the most-watched English-language series on Netflix for two weeks, racking up over 224 million hours of viewing time in just three weeks. The second season was released over three weeks, with new episodes appearing in groups. The show immediately throws contestants into intense competitions that really test their ability to work together and trust each other.
As a viewer, I’m continually fascinated by The Challenge. It’s not just about physical strength; the way the contestants interact and the unexpected turns the game takes really make you question what it’s all about. It feels like a real social experiment disguised as a competition. Visually, it’s striking – the show clearly took notes from the success of Squid Game, creating a world that’s both bizarre and meticulously crafted. Given its popularity, it’s no shock Netflix has already greenlit a third season, slated for July 2025.
When it first came out in 2021, the show quickly captured viewers with its thought-provoking look at inequality and the lengths people will go to when they’re desperate. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who also wrote and directed it, the series centers around 456 people deeply in debt who compete in a dangerous and deadly version of children’s games for a chance to win over $39.86 million.
Starring Lee Jung-jae as the determined Seong Gi-hun, the show blended stunning imagery with intense psychological challenges to create a story that was both exciting and emotionally resonant. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk first conceived of Squid Game over ten years before it premiered, drawing inspiration from his personal financial hardships and the widening gap between rich and poor in South Korea.
Squid Game Season 1 Won Several Awards
In 2019, Netflix decided to move forward with the series as part of its plan to offer more international content. What began as a script that seemed impossible to film quickly became a global hit. Squid Game broke all of Netflix’s viewing records, becoming the most-watched series ever. In just the first 28 days, people watched the show for over 1.65 billion hours, and it was a top hit in 94 countries for many weeks.
The show wasn’t just popular with viewers; it also received critical acclaim, including Emmy Awards for Lee Jung-jae as lead actor and Hwang Dong-hyuk for directing, plus a Golden Globe. Seasons two and three premiered in December 2024 and June 2025, respectively.
With each new part, the story of the series grew, continuing to examine what’s right and wrong. Season 2 showed Gi-hun coming back to the game to face his enemy and get revenge, and the final season wrapped up the whole story with unexpected twists, heartbreaking losses, and shocking truths.
New episodes of Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2 will debut on Netflix on Nov 11.
