Jessica Chastain, who won an Academy Award, and Chris Pine are the latest additions to the cast of Elijah Bynum’s upcoming dark comedy crime thriller, My Darling California.
Starring Jessica Chastain and Chris Pine, along with Josh Brolin, Charles Melton, Don Cheadle, and Oscar winner Mikey Madison, My Darling California is a Los Angeles-based story about how one crime brings together a diverse group of people. The film follows a TV host, his wife who feels unfulfilled, a famous country singer, a pair of petty criminals, and a recently released ex-con, all searching for a fresh start.
Elijah Bynum started his career as a filmmaker with the movie Hot Summer Nights, featuring Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe. He continued with Magazine Dreams, which gained attention at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, and released The Deliverance in 2024.
Okay, so I’m hearing this movie is already making waves before even hitting the American Film Market! Apparently, international buyers are circling it, and everyone’s saying it’s one of the hottest properties available. It’s easy to see why – the cast is incredible, and the director/writer team is seriously impressive. It sounds like a project everyone needs to get their hands on.
David Hinojosa of 2 AM, the company behind Materialists, is producing the film, with Zach Nutman serving as executive producer. Anton (Greenland) is providing funding and managing sales at AFM, with CAA Media Finance also involved. Filming for My Darling California is scheduled to begin in 2026.
With My Darling California, Jessica Chastain continues a trend of choosing roles that are both critically acclaimed and emotionally complex. Throughout her career, she’s consistently portrayed nuanced female characters, exploring the often-blurred lines between strength and vulnerability – a pattern evident in films like Zero Dark Thirty and her Oscar-winning performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
Actor Simon Pegg is moving towards more dramatic roles. He’s currently working on an Italian film called The Kidnapping of Arabella, after directing Poolman in 2023 and playing Magnifico in Disney’s Wish. This represents a change from his work in large franchises like Star Trek and Wonder Woman towards more realistic and character-driven projects.
Bynum is becoming well-known as a director, which makes this new project even more exciting. His earlier film, Magazine Dreams, delved into the troubling aspects of striving for success and finding oneself, using a very focused and psychological approach. Now, with My Darling California, he appears to be revisiting themes of fame’s cost and conflicting values, but on a grander scale with a large ensemble cast.
With a strong cast and intriguing genre, this film is generating a lot of buzz before the American Film Market. It’s expected to attract both distributors seeking award-winning films and international buyers looking for commercially successful, high-quality projects. The film’s concept is similar to recent popular and critically acclaimed thrillers like 2022’s The Menu.
Scheduled to start filming next year, My Darling California is already generating a lot of buzz as a promising new Hollywood drama. With a rising director at the helm and a strong cast, the movie has the potential to be a significant contender during awards season.
