Behold, in the sky! It appears to be a bird, it seems a plane, but no, it’s Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, gracing our screens for the first time in a live-action film within James Gunn’s Superman movie (set for release on July 11). In this production, she embodies Kendra Saunders, the avian DC Comics heroine. The storyline places her among a team of superheroes, provisionally named the Justice Gang, who are financially backed by tech tycoon Maxwell Lord (portrayed by Sean Gunn). This group includes Mr. Terrific, a tech genius played by Edi Gathegi, and Green Lantern Guy Gardner, brought to life by Nathan Fillion.
In the second season of “Peacemaker,” which is set to air on August 21st on HBO Max, Merced reappears in the DC Universe. This highly successful series, spun off from “The Suicide Squad,” is created by Gunn. The trailers for this new season suggest that Hawkgirl, Lord, and a Green Lantern with a bowl cut are interviewing Christopher Smith (played by John Cena), possibly as a replacement for Mr. Terrific within the Justice League team.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Merced explains how Superman plays a significant role in the story of Peacemaker. She found it enjoyable to explore her connection with Maxwell Lord, portrayed by Sean Gunn.
Merced praises Sean, expressing admiration for James’ commitment to working with a consistent team, as she discusses the actor who portrayed Kraglin and Rocket Raccoon in the Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy under James Gunn’s direction. She appreciates this loyalty and hopes to join that group now. In both Superman and Peacemaker, Merced enjoyed delving into the dynamic between the Justice League.
“I did this for James Gunn, truly,” Merced says of Superman, joking she’s “more of a Batman girl.”
At the Los Angeles debut of the movie “Superman” on Monday evening, Merced served as a representative for Progressive’s in-app safety function, Accident Response. The Progressive duo, Flo and Jamie (familiar faces from Progressive’s “Superman” commercial playing in cinemas), were present alongside Merced at the premiere to emphasize the genuine heroism demonstrated by this feature that assists drivers during critical situations.
In Meghan Walsh’s words, as Business Leader of Integrated Marketing at Progressive Insurance, she expressed that Accident Response provides immediate assistance to customers in need. Partnering with Superman offers an exciting, playful approach to demonstrate the impactful support provided by Progressive. When faced with the unexpected, Progressive is ready to come to the rescue.
I’m thrilled to share that I can’t wait to catch DC Studios’ Superman on the big screen next month! Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, this blockbuster also features an impressive ensemble cast including Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/the Engineer, Wendell Pierce as the esteemed editor-in-chief Perry White, Neva Howell as Ma Kent, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Pa Kent, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. Mark your calendars, it’s hitting theaters on July 11!
