Don’t Expect Any PS5 Exclusives from Square Enix in the Future

Square Enix is really focusing on releasing games on multiple platforms, and recently released documents show just how much the company is counting on this new approach to succeed.

During its recent earnings presentation, Sony highlighted plans to expand the reach of its PlayStation 5 exclusive games by releasing them on other platforms. They dedicated a slide to this initiative, essentially showing which PS5 games will now be available on more devices.

Okay, so it’s official! Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is finally coming to Xbox Series X|S and the new Switch 2 next year, which is awesome! And it looks like we can expect Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to follow after that, which is huge news for fans like me!

The chart highlights that games like Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and Final Fantasy Tactics were released on several platforms simultaneously. The upcoming Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is planned to do the same.

Starting in March 2025, we’ve begun releasing existing games on more platforms to reach a wider audience and grow the popularity of each game series.

Interestingly, Bravely Default Flying Fairy isn’t included in their plans, despite launching earlier this year as a game only available on the Switch 2. It seems they don’t consider it part of their strategy for releasing games on multiple platforms.

Ultimately, we’re interested to see how much this improves the fortunes of Square Enix’s games.

Making games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 available in more regions will definitely reach a wider audience, but it’s unclear if that will significantly boost sales. Players still need to have played the first two games, which is a considerable time commitment.

We expect the PlayStation 5’s sales to decrease significantly, but total game sales should remain about the same. We could be wrong, of course. Additionally, Square Enix might lose a lot of marketing help from Sony.

Square Enix’s financial performance for the first half of its fiscal year, ending March 31st, 2026, was generally stable and didn’t show any major changes.

Okay, so things were a little mixed for the company recently. Sales were down about 15%, which isn’t great, but surprisingly, their overall profit actually went up! A huge part of that was because of Magic the Gathering – the new Final Fantasy set was a massive hit and really boosted their merchandise sales. It’s awesome to see a popular collaboration paying off like this!
