Beginning as a popular line of action figures from Hasbro in 1984, the Transformers quickly became a major part of popular culture. They expanded beyond toys into a cartoon series (1984-1987) and comic books. While the original cartoon wasn’t perfect, it paved the way for future success. The 2007 film, directed by Michael Bay, was a turning point, launching the franchise onto the world stage and making it one of the most successful entertainment properties ever.
The Transformers franchise has grown to include more sophisticated animated series, like the Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy on Netflix. It’s also consistently been on television, with Transformers: EarthSpark being the newest show in a tradition that started in the 1980s. This long history of success means there will always be more Transformers content coming. Here’s a look at all the upcoming movies and what we know about them.
What we Know About The Next Mainline Live-Action ‘Transformers’ Movie

Paramount Pictures
The most recent Transformers movie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, came out in 2023. Although that doesn’t seem like long ago, there was a five-year wait between that film and Bumblebee (2018). Currently, there’s no official news about Transformers 8, including when it might be released. You may have seen reports about Transformers 8: Rise of Unicron potentially coming in late 2025 or 2027, but these are based on popular AI-generated trailers. It’s important to verify your sources! Neither Paramount Pictures nor Hasbro has announced the next Transformers movie, so fans should hold off until an official announcement is made.
Currently, no one knows for sure what the next Transformers movie (the eighth installment) will be about. Some fans predict the story will center around Unicron, while others think Megatron will become Galvatron, following the established storyline. A lot of excitement exists around the possibility of featuring Maximals and Predacons, inspired by the Beast Wars series. There’s also unconfirmed talk, reported by Comic Book, that Michael Bay might return to direct. Paramount Pictures has until 2029 to begin work on a new Transformers film to keep the rights to the franchise. Considering the previous movie, Rise of the Beasts, took three years to make, and if the next one is similar in scope, a new film might not arrive until 2032 or even later. Hopefully, we’ll get official news about the future of the series well before then, as reported by The InSneider.
Josh Cooley’s Follow-Up to ‘Transformers One’ Remains Unlikely

Paramount Pictures
I was really excited for Transformers One because it showed how Optimus Prime and Megatron first became rivals – a story I’ve always wanted to see! And the cast was incredible – Chris Hemsworth as Optimus, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, plus Scarlett Johansson and Jon Hamm! Everyone seemed to love it, with critics giving it an 89% rating and fans an even higher 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s such a shame, though, that despite all the good reviews, it didn’t do well in theaters. It only made about $128 million worldwide, and with a budget of $75 million plus all the marketing, it likely lost money. That means the plans for a trilogy have unfortunately been cancelled, which is really disappointing.
During Botcon 2025, director Josh Cooley discussed the possibility of a sequel to Transformers One. He explained that, as far as he knew, Paramount Animation wasn’t planning one, though he personally had ideas and would have liked to continue the story. While both Cooley’s statements and the film’s disappointing box office results suggest another Transformers One movie is unlikely, it’s not entirely impossible. Many fans would be thrilled if the film were to become a Netflix original, and anything could still happen.
The Potential Transformers, GI Joe Crossover

Paramount Pictures
The end of ‘Transformers: The Rise of the Beasts’ included a scene hinting at a crossover with ‘G.I. Joe,’ which excited fans. This was followed by announcements at CinemaCon in 2024, and rumors that Chris Hemsworth might star, adding to the anticipation. However, there haven’t been any major updates about the project since then. While it was initially suggested the movie could come out in 2025 or 2026, a 2025 release is now impossible, and a 2026 release seems very unlikely.
The planned crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joe is still in the very early stages, and it’s not guaranteed to be made. Even if it does move forward, there’s no telling when fans might actually see it. This is a big project for Paramount+, with potential for both new movies and merchandise. They’re likely to take a cautious approach, making sure they have a solid plan before bringing these two iconic franchises together.
The Future of the ‘Transformers’ Franchise

Paramount
The Transformers movie series is at a crucial moment. The latest films, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Transformers One, didn’t perform well in theaters. However, Paramount+ isn’t abandoning the franchise completely. It’s clear that Paramount is carefully considering its next steps, and all future projects are currently in the very early stages of development. While we don’t have any details about release dates or storylines yet, fans can expect updates soon, definitely before 2029.
While we wait for news about future Transformers movies, fans can enjoy all the existing films now on Paramount+.
