In Japan, Switch 2 Retail Sales Are Already Closing on PS5

Last week’s launch of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake in Japan was highly anticipated. The Dragon Quest series is incredibly popular, and this new version was released on multiple platforms, including the Switch, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5.

As a huge fan, I wasn’t surprised to see the Switch version selling the most! With so many people owning a Switch, it moved a massive 232,000 copies – totally makes sense given Nintendo’s huge player base.

The Switch 2 version sold 84,000 units, a close second to the PS5’s 96,000 units, indicating the new Nintendo console is quickly gaining ground on Sony’s console.

It’s important to remember that Famitsu only counts sales of physical game copies. This means even in Japan, where digital sales aren’t as common as elsewhere, the total sales numbers they report aren’t complete.

Despite this, it highlights how rapidly Nintendo’s new console is gaining ground on the PS5 in terms of attracting customers to multi-platform games.

As of today, 7.13 million PlayStation 5 consoles and 2.55 million Switch 2 consoles have been sold in Japan. Interestingly, sales figures for major games released on both consoles are already quite similar.

I’ve been following the news about the Switch 2, and there’s been a lot of talk about them using a new Game Key Card instead of traditional cartridges. Honestly, I thought that might turn some people off, but it doesn’t seem to be affecting sales in Japan at all! Nintendo’s still moving a ton of software there, which is really impressive.

Japan generally prefers portable gaming devices, which benefits Nintendo. However, it seems Sony is finding it difficult to compete with the Switch’s strong dominance in Japan.
