Nintendo Report Is Bad News for Switch 1 Owners

It’s common for gamers to worry older consoles will be abandoned when new ones launch. However, Nintendo Switch owners haven’t had a bad experience so far with the Switch 2. While some new games are only available on the Switch 2, many popular titles are still being released on both the original Switch and the new model. This means players can still enjoy big games like Pokemon Legends: Z-A without needing to buy a new console. Recent financial reports from Nintendo suggest this support for the original Switch might not continue indefinitely, though.

Nintendo recently shared its financial results, giving us a look at the company’s present and future. The report revealed plans for 10 new games specifically for the Switch 2, which is exciting news for players who already have the console. However, if you were planning to hold off on buying the new system, Nintendo’s strategy might change your mind. By 2026, the company intends to concentrate almost entirely on creating games for the Switch 2.

Nintendo Is Going to Focus on Switch 2 Moving Forward

Nintendo is already working on several games for the Switch 2, planned for release next year. This is a smart move, as new games are a major reason people buy consoles. Nintendo says that about 84% of original Switch owners have already upgraded to the Switch 2. Because so many customers have made the switch, Nintendo feels confident focusing its development efforts solely on the new console. There’s little point in creating games for both the older and newer models when most players already have the Switch 2.

Nintendo has observed that even games recently released for the Nintendo Switch are mostly being played on the newer Switch 2 console. This suggests that the remaining first-party games planned for the original Switch this year might be the last ones ever released for it. Nintendo’s recent financial report shows their game plans from October onwards, and it’s clear there aren’t any new games scheduled for the original Switch in 2026.

The upcoming games include Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, launching December 4th on both Switch and the new Switch 2, and the eagerly awaited relaxing game, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. Pokemon Champions is also planned for release in 2026. After these titles, it appears most new games will be exclusive to the Switch 2. Unless Nintendo announces more games they’re developing internally, this small selection may be the last to come out on both the original Switch and the Switch 2 at the same time.

Despite the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, the original Switch isn’t being discontinued. Nintendo will be focusing more on the new console, but the older model continues to sell well, even with a price increase. As long as there’s still demand, Nintendo plans to keep making the original Switch and its accessories. While it may receive fewer exclusive new games, the original Switch will continue to be supported for the time being.

It’s understandable that Nintendo is moving forward with a new console, but it’s a shame for players who can’t afford to upgrade to the Switch 2 right now. Hopefully, we’ll still get some great new games from other developers for the original Switch for a good while longer.
